James Goldman’s, THE LION IN WINTER, a Tony award-winner and modern-day classic, packed with dramatic action and dripping with dark humor, marks Theater UnCorked’s opening production of Season 6 at the BCA Plaza Theatre in Boston.
SYNOPSIS: “It is Christmas in the 12th century, and Henry II’s family is in tatters. His once-loving wife and now sworn enemy, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been released from prison and is seeking vengeance at any cost; his three sons – Richard, Geoffrey, and John – are profoundly incompetent, consumed by petty sibling squabbles and gridlocked in duplicitous scheming; and his mistress (who just happens to be betrothed to his son) is running out of patience, demanding either a wedding or the return of her much-needed dowry. And you thought your holidays were complicated! The play explores the power struggles and inner conflicts between King Henry II of England, his brilliant wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their three sons who are locked in a struggle over the succession of the throne. As the family comes together for the first time in years, the chess game of royal succession begins with everyone vying for power, prestige and the greatest prize of all, true love."
Who is ready for a little “Family Dysfunction?” or as Eleanor more candidly proclaims, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”
General Seating $45

Theater UnCorked has opened its sixth season with a sharp, searing production of “The Lion in Winter” that lays out a powerful story of a royal family struggling both with succession planning and with each other. It may be an unconventional offering given this season’s predictable plethora of holiday productions, but the drama – which inspired the Fox-TV series “Empire” – is definitely a gift for discerning theatergoers.
