Continuing their signature new plays based on pivotal historical moments in our region, Borderlands Theater presents a timely new drama exploring the origins of the sanctuary movement. Written by Milta Ortiz, who penned 2015's award winning Mas, about the banning of ethnic studies classes in T.U.S.D., Sanctuary is based on the people and events leading up to the 1980's Sanctuary movement that ignited in Tucson when concerned citizens took a radical moral stand in support of people fleeing unimaginable violence.

Famed country music artist and Broadway star Gary Morris announces that famed actor/raconteur Wilford Brimley will make a special appearance in a benefit concert for Morris's injured niece and other victims of domestic violence. Gary Morris and Friends: A Benefit for Heather also will feature Tucson native Lisa Morales and other artists on Friday, Aug. 24 at 8:00 p.m. at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Baroness Orczy. This reviewer is in awe of what he saw opening weekend of Valley Youth Theatre's production of NEWSIES The Musical: A spectacular triumph of talent and artistry, all the more impressive because of the amazing young performers (ages 12 to 18!) whose versatility and range of technical proficiency is jaw-dropping. Kale Burr is terrific! Tony Spinosa's choreography is tremendous! So is the entire ensemble! An auspicious way to begin the company's 30th Anniversary Season! Runs thru Aug 26 at Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix.

Military families, veterans, and Luke Air Force Base employees enjoyed professional theatre performances during Arizona Broadway Theatre's Season 13 thanks to a generous grant from the Arizona Coyotes Foundation.  The 2017-18 grant, coordinated through the Arizona Community Foundation, made it possible for nearly 600 members of the Luke Air Force Base community to receive complimentary tickets for Broadway-style productions and children's theatre experiences at Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria.
