Video: First Look at APPROPRIATE at Seattle Rep

Seattle Rep has released first look footage of APPROPRIATE, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' 2024 Tony Award-winning drama now playing through May 10, 2026 at the Bagley Wright Theater in Seattle.

Review: APPROPRIATE at The Seattle Rep

Dear Readers, why do we like shows about dysfunctional families? I posit that it’s one of two reasons. Either we are reveling in knowing that your family isn’t that bad or watching as more of a catharsis of seeing a family like yours get through their dysfunction. Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins seems to enjoy them too as he keeps making them and making them well. Last year’s Tony Award winner for Best Play was his, “Purpose”, and the year before he won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play with “Appropriate”. But whatever your reason for seeing these kinds of shows, you’ll want to catch the Seattle Rep’s current production of “Appropriate” as they’ve knocked it out of the park.

Interview: Timothy McCuen Piggee Opens Up About APPROPRIATE

When the Lafayettes descend upon their late father’s crumbling plantation home for an estate sale, they unearth an appalling secret that pits them against one another. Through a cascading series of revelations, biting humor boils over into bruising conflict, and no one will escape this family gathering unscathed. Smart, incendiary, and never before produced in Seattle, this 2024 Tony Award winner by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Everybody, An Octoroon) depicts a Southern family wrestling with a destructive inheritance as they consider the legacy they want to leave for the next generation.

Review: THE COLOR PURPLE at Village Theatre

Dear Readers, when discussing the musical of Alice Walker’s classic novel “The Color Purple”, you must acknowledge the production’s own journey from the tepidly received original 2005 Broadway production to the enthusiastically received 2015 Broadway revival which launched the career of the incredible Cynthia Erivo. We can discuss them in a bit but to start I will say that the current production at Village Theatre is certainly in the 2015 camp, with its streamlined production and roof shaking performances.

Village Theatre's Soaring New Production Of THE COLOR PURPLE Begins May 27

Beloved Seattle theater mainstay, Director Timothy McCuen Piggee (Hello, Dolly!), brings a triumphant new take to Village Theatre's production of The Color Purple, a powerful musical celebration of resilience and self-discovery featuring a Grammy Award-winning score infused with jazz, gospel, ragtime and the blues, with music supervision by American theater legend Sheilah V Walker (Broadway's Porgy and Bess and Ragtime, The Color Purple National Tour).

Review: FAT HAM at Seattle Rep

So, did the Rep’s “Fat Ham” crush my soul? Absolutely not and I must entreat anyone reading this, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!

Cast and Creative Team Set For FAT HAM at Seattle Rep

Seattle Rep has announced the cast and creative team for their upcoming production of Fat Ham, a reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet set at a Southern Black family cookout.

Review: HELLO, DOLLY! at Village Theatre

In the musical theater world, there are classics and then there are Classics (with the big “C”). Jerry Herman’s “Hello, Dolly!” is certainly a big “C” Classic and I’m here to fight anyone who says different. It’s a delicious throwback to the Golden Age of musicals and certainly a star vehicle for the right star. And speaking of the right star, the current production of “Dolly”, currently playing at Village Theatre, shows just how good this Classic can be with the incredible Bobbi Kotula in the title role who proves that she’s not a star, but a Star!
