This week, Broadway Sings presented its first brand new concert in over two years at Sony Hall, Broadway Sings Celine Dion. The show featured a starry cast of Broadway performers belting out original arrangements of Dion’s hits, accompanied by an 11-piece orchestra. A show featured a special performance from original cast members of the award-winning off-Broadway show Titanique. See photos from the concert!
What ties down the project is the one-woman aspect of it. Wilkinson Wright is a tremendous actress, but this direction gives her a staged personality disorder. The framing of the play throws it straight into the action; the performer modulates her voice to shape the different women, but the result is messy and unconvincing, especially if one isn’t familiar with this part of history. It’s not exactly the most streamlined solo show at the Fringe, but it’s among the most compelling subjects for sure.

Subversive and riveting, David Ives's clever adaptation of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novella titillates and shocks, delving into mythology while blurring the line between the divine and the pedestrian. In channeling Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Ives's stab at foreplay is piquant and dangerous. Should the playwright continue to craft erotic content, he could secure a place among the genre-defining authors alongside Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin.
