On June 3, 1950 the French mountaineer Maurice Herzog stood on the impossibly high summit of Annapurna I – and dropped his gloves into the yawning chasm below. Descending barehanded, he soon lost his fingers to frostbite; most of them were eventually amputated. He thus became the patron saint of all who have, with a single act, a single mistake, ruined their lives.

“Annapurna” is the name of a massif in the Himalaya mountain range, the Hindu goddess of nourishment and the next play in the reimagined and fully digital Syracuse Stage 2020/2021 season. Written by Sharr White and directed by Stage artistic director Robert Hupp, “Annapurna” is a carefully balanced blend of sharp comedy and surprisingly tender drama that draws inspiration from both meanings of its title.

Thoughts of a Colored Man, the new play by Keenan Scott II will play Broadway’s Golden Theatre. Signaling a genuine moment of optimism about the future return of theater to New York City, this morning, the marquee for Thoughts of a Colored Man was installed at the Golden Theatre making it the first new show to take up residence at a Broadway theater since the pandemic forced all plays and musicals to stop performances on March 12, 2020.

Syracuse Stage never ceases to amaze me with their eye for productions, casting, and unique presentations. I have to say I was concerned when I saw that this streaming production was three hours long. However, it was three hours very well spent. Syracuse Stage’s production of the stunning documentary drama Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Anna Deavere Smith is beautifully and creatively directed by Steve H. Broadnax III.
