Trumpeter Terence Blanchard Joins GR Symphony For SYMPHONY WITH SOUL

Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, a six-time Grammy Award winner and longtime collaborator with film director Spike Lee, will be the special guest artist for the Grand Rapids Symphony's 19th annual Symphony with Soul at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, in DeVos Performance Hall.

Segerstrom Center Will Present An Evening of Jazz with Cécile McLorin Salvant and the Aaron Diehl Trio

Segerstrom Center for the Arts doubleheader evening of two performances by multi-Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant and the esteemed Aaron Diehl Trio on March 28, 2020. Performances will be at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. in Samueli Theater. Since winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010, Salvant has evolved into one of today's most prescient forces in jazz She opens the evening with a fearless approach to art that transcends the conventional. Said Rolling Stone, 'Salvant is regularly and rightly considered one of the greatest jazz singers of her generation, but that label sells her short.' She is joined by her musical director and jazz piano virtuoso Aaron Diehl at the helm of his trio who then take Center stage as one of the preeminent interpreters of the Great American songbook.

Denise La Grassa Quartet is Coming to Buddy Guy's Legends With Free Show

Critically-acclaimed Chicagoland singer, songwriter and keyboardist Denise La Grassa will perform her music with her quartet of John Kregor (guitar), Kurt Shelby (bass) and James Sims (drums), at Buddy Guy's Legends, the world's premiere blues club, to commemorate Women's History Month. La Grassa released her first live CD Rockin' in the Castle Theater in September 2019 to join her other jazz CDs, April Dreams and The Blues Ain't a Color, the soundtrack to her one woman show of the same name. Janet Dacal is releasing her debut solo album My Standards in digital and streaming formats tomorrow, February 7. It will be released on CD on Friday, February 14. A collection of Dacal's favorite standards with a Cuban-American flair, the album features special guests vocalists Olivia C. Dacal and Javier Muñoz. A veteran of Broadway's In the Heights and Wonderland, Dacal is currently starring in the national tour of the Tony Award-winning 'Best Musical' The Band's Visit. My Standards was produced by Alberto Salas and Janet Dacal, with Carlos Josè Alvarez serving as principle arranger. Alberto Salas is the Music Director for the 13 piece band.

February 2020 Lineup Announced At Birdland Jazz Club And Birdland Theater

Birdland Jazz Club and Birdland Theater are pleased to present the schedule for the month of February! At Birdland Jazz Club, catch the iconic Lionel Hampton Big Band Featuring Jason Marsalis, current GRAMMY nominee Catherine Russell, the Birdland debut of AGUAS Trio with Omar Sosa, Yilian Cañizares and Gustavo Ovalles, and iconic vocalist Jane Monheit. Internationally recognized trumpeter Rachel Therrien, the Seth Weaver Big Band, and The Voice contestant Melinda Rose Rodriguez will also be performing upstairs. 

The Apollo Theater to Screen SHAFT with Live Score

The Apollo Theater announced today that it will screen the iconic MGM film Shaft (1971), as part of the Apollo Film series, on Saturday February 29th at 8:00 p.m. The screening will be accompanied by a live performance of Isaac Hayes' Academy Award® nominated score by Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, a sprawling band of musicians led by founder and cultural critic Greg Tate.

New Assembly Celebrates Newark Jazz Legend Sarah Vaughan

Continuing its long tradition of honoring and celebrating the legacy of musical icon and Newark native Sarah Vaughan, Newport Festivals Foundation and The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) announce the jointly-presented biographical drama, Free Bird: The Early Life of Sarah Vaughan. This half-hour theatrical performance will premiere at Newark's public schools, and at free performances at community venues across Newark, beginning in January of 2020.
