Seattle Opera Presents DECOLONIZING ALLURE: WOMEN ARTISTS OF COLOR IN CONVERSATION
by A.A. Cristi
- Apr 17, 2019
At one point in time, a Seattle Opera ticket offered a relatively predictable experience: an enchanted night out, a grand presentation, and often a familiar telling of a popular work. But in the past few years, Seattle Opera has been inviting audiences to explore this art form from a different perspective. Prior to its May performances of Carmen, the company will hold a free panel discussion that will flip opera's depiction of the exotic "Other" on its head. On April 26, the company presents "Decolonizing Allure: Women Artists of Color in Conversation."
Seattle Opera Presents CARMEN
by A.A. Cristi
- Apr 3, 2019
Bizet's Carmen is often labeled as a sexy opera. The leading lady is a woman who sings unabashedly of her appetite for l'amour, cigarette smoke billowing from her lips. And the music some of the most iconic in the art form can't help but get under one's skin; it's that tuneful and seductive. This May, Seattleites will be able to experience this titillating opera for themselves through a new production of Carmen under the baton of Maestro Giacomo Sagripanti, who returns following The Barber of Seville ('17). Renowned British director Paul Curran and production designer Gary McCann will treat audiences to lavish sets and a multitude of stylish factory girls, townsfolk, smugglers, soldiers, and toreadors.
Velocity Presents Neve Mazique-Bianco's LOVER OF LOW CREATURES
by Rebecca Russo
- Mar 30, 2019
Velocity is very excited to announce their upcoming co-production with Seattle's own rising dance star Neve Mazique-Bianco's Lover of Low Creatures, a world premiere that will run at Velocity's Founders Theater May 9-12 2019. This radical, genre-defying work is a sung-through Nubian musical ballet that tells the coming-of-age of a young, bi-racial, disabled, queer child growing up deep in the heart of white, small-town New Jersey. While the performance is a prequel to Bet Ya UnGodly Things, which premiered at Gay City Arts in January 2018, Mazique-Bianco is kicking things up a notch this time by teaming up with another rising star in Seattle performance, director Sara Porkalob, who recently co-curated the Intiman's 2017 season and snagged three Gregory Awards in 2018 for her new play Dragon Lady, in addition to landing on Seattle Magazine's "Most Influential People of 2018." This will be the first collaboration between these two radical artists of color who are changing the face of performance in Seattle, and will mark Mazique-Bianco's first full-length performance at Velocity.
