BWW Review: PERTH CABARET COLLECTIVE: A FESTIVE JAMBOREE at Downstairs At The Maj
by Cicely Binford
- Dec 29, 2019
Some say it's the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas; probably because they're quoting the song. And there are plenty of reasons to celebrate as the year draws to a close, so why not spend an evening Downstairs at the Maj with the Perth Cabaret Collective, singing along to some of your favourite Christmas tunes and familiar jazz standards, featuring the vocal stylings of Jessie Gordon, Cougar Morrison and Mark Turner? It's a perfectly suitable, reasonable, seasonal thing to do.

BWW Review: JPAC's COMPANY is Robust with Life and Meaning
by Rakaputra Paputungan
- Dec 28, 2019
Stephen Sondheim's cerebral, minimalist COMPANY might not be an obvious choice for a community theater here in Indonesia where musicals are still often seen as jazz-hands and kicklines, but director Fonnyta Amran and JPAC (Jakarta Performing Arts Community) made it work. The production of COMPANY was as game-changing as its original Broadway counterpart back in the day.
BWW Review: CATS at the Sands Theatre, what a fantastic mewsicle!
by Joceline Loo
- Dec 23, 2019
Are they still hungry? Do they want a head scratch? We all have wondered what are our pets thinking at some point, and due to the bond shared, we are usually able to make a good guess. What about the alleycats that we pass on the streets? With eyes that track our every movement. The times where I am walking my dog at night, they crouched amongst the bushes with an arch back and ready to pounce. To help us better understand these elusive beings, 'CATS' has returned to the Sands Theater, Marina Bay Sands!
BWW Review: TEMAN's HAIRSPRAY is Big, Blustery, and Beautiful
by Rakaputra Paputungan
- Dec 22, 2019
After the artful, intimate INTO THE WOODS last year, TEMAN (Teater Musikal Nusantara) is back with the bombastic and bodacious HAIRSPRAY. Directed by Broadway's Brandon Bieber, the glam production was worthy of Broadway barring noticeable technical issues.

Preheat to the year 1835. Mix the Baker and the Nobleman together until romance blossoms. For a little confusion, gently add the Sweet Young Lady into the mix. Sprinkle in a pinch of frustrated love, and then add a dash of Hero rushing in to save the day. Bake at 350 degrees for the length of one duel, or until ready to admit the truth. Serves them all right.

BWW Review: DYKE THE HALLS: A DYKING OUT HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR at Joe's Pub
by Rebecca Kaplan
- Dec 19, 2019
Joe's Pub was filled with laughter and 'gaiety' (in both senses of the word) on Monday night at Dyke the Halls. Carolyn Bergier, host of the Dyking Out podcast, put together a truly diverse variety show line up, with performers from all types of backgrounds and performance styles. Standouts included Eman El-Husseini and Jess Salomon, a Jewish-Muslim married couple, stand up by Emma Willmann, and a downright strange but very funny burlesque number by Nyx Nocturne that played on 'All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth' with a sexy, porn-esque dentist-themed dance.
