The Bright Smoke Share Third Album 'Gross National Happiness'

The Bright Smoke from Brooklyn have just released their third album, Gross National Happiness,which came out on July 5 -- the day after Independence Day (draw any conclusions that seem fitting). This LP is the project's first release in four years, and of course, quite a bit has happened (politically) since then. The anxiety, fear, and chaos of the album cover says it all.

Theatre in the Park Presents THE MUSIC MAN 07/05-13

You got trouble, right here in Kansas City as Theatre in the Park (TIP) presents THE MUSIC MAN opening on Friday, July 5. The third production of TIP's historic 50th summer season, THE MUSIC MAN is Americana at its best and is the most requested show in the theatre's history! Performances of THE MUSIC MAN continue Saturday and Sunday, July 6 & 7 as well as the following Wednesday, July 10 through Saturday, July 13. The TIP box office opens at 6:30 p.m. on performance evenings, the gates to the seating area open at 7 p.m., and all performances begin at 8:30 p.m.

Gamm Announces Change To 2019-2020 Season Lineup

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm), under the leadership of Artistic Director Tony Estrella, today announced the addition of Aaron Posner's new play JQA in the second slot of the 2019-2020 lineup. Estrella will direct the New England premiere of JQA, in which a diverse cast of four actors share the role of one-term American President John Quincy Adams. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' An Octoroon, previously announced as the season's second play, will open The Gamm's 2020-2021 season instead. Joe Wilson, Jr., Coordinator of Activism through Performance and Resident Acting Company Member at Trinity Repertory Company, will direct Jacobs-Jenkins' Obie Award-winning play that explodes ideas about race and American identity. JQA runs from October 24-November 17 at The Gamm Theatre, 1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick, RI. Season subscriptions for Season 35 are on sale now. Single tickets go on sale in early August. Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrates 50 years of dance at Jacob's Pillow and commemorates the legacy of their late co-founder Arthur Mitchell in the Ted Shawn Theatre, July 10-14. Founding member and principal dancer Virginia Johnson now leads the multi-ethnic ballet company known for their innovative repertoire, acclaimed as "classy, earnest, and potent" (LA Times). Returning to the Pillow for the first time in five years, Dance Theatre of Harlem performs a program showcasing the dancers' diverse technical expertise in Darrell Grand Moultrie's Harlem on My Mind, Christopher Wheeldon's This Bitter Earth, George Balanchine's Valse Fantaisie, and premiering at the Pillow, an expanded version of Jacob's Pillow Dance Award winner Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's Balamouk.

Amazon Studios Begins Production on BLISS Starring Salma Hayek, Owen Wilson

Amazon Studios started principal photography on visionary director Mike Cahill's (I Origins, Another Earth) Bliss this week in Los Angeles and Croatia. Academy Award nominees Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson are set to star in this sci-fi drama also written by Cahill. Endgame Entertainment's James D. Stern is producing, with the company's Lucas Smith serving as executive producer. Marsha Swinton (Hala) will also executive produce.

Rochester Fringe Festival Reveals 2019 Lineup

This release will be their first in four years, and of course, quite a bit has happened politically since then. Themes on the record range from reflecting on the dangers of false virtue, pushing boundaries, being the victim and the aggressor in the same breath, calling an end of violence, art as whole, and a subject dear to the band, identifying as queer.

REVIVAL: THE RESURRECTION OF SON HOUSE at Geva Theatre

To close out their 2018-2019 season Rochester's Geva Theatre chose a piece with deep historical, musical, and local significance. Revival: The Resurrection of Son House was commissioned by Geva in 2015 and received a staged reading that year at their festival 'Journey to the Son: A Celebration of Son House.' The fully-staged production is now getting its world premiere, and it's the perfect capstone to a season rich with history, diverse voices, and new works.
