Buglisi Dance Theatre celebrates its 26th Anniversary Season with a program of works by artistic director Jacqulyn Buglisi, company principal dancer Virginie Mécène, Kristine Bendul and Abdiel Jacobsen, and Meagan King. The program will feature two world premieres by Ms. Buglisi, and a NYC premiere by Ms. Mécène, presented with a commissioning award from the New York State Council on the Arts, and performed by the brilliant of company dancers known for their power and passion. The Tuesday December 10 performance, an early Performance of Premieres running one hour, will begin at 6 PM and consist of The Moss Anthology: Variation#5, UNUM, In the name of the fire, and the flame, and grace, and Sand. The full program will be performed Wednesday and Thursday, with curtain time at 7:30 PM.
Yara Arts Group will offer the American debut of its new work 'Opera GAZ,' December 19, 20 and 22 at La MaMa, 66 East 4th Street. This opera was created by director Virlana Tkacz, who heads Yara Arts Group in New York, and the composers Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko. It features the performers of Nova Opera in Kyiv. Live performances and traditional instruments are combined with electronic music to present the story of an explosion at a futuristic gas factory that produces all the energy for the industrial world. The visually striking production is sung in English, Ukrainian and German but is universally accessible.
Center for Performance Research today announced that it has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for FY2020 AND FY2021 with the support of Governor Andrew M. The Iraqi maqam (modal system), one of Iraq's richest cultural offerings, features sophisticated melodies, infectious rhythms, and eloquent poetry. Hamid Al-Saadi, Iraq's foremost exponent of this centuries-old tradition, is renowned for his powerful voice and highly ornamented style, as well as his comprehensive knowledge of the intricate details of the music and poetry of Iraq. Al-Saadi is the only person from his generation to have memorized and mastered all 56 maqamat from the Baghdad repertoire, and is one of the few vocalists to keep this maqam alive today. He is joined by Safaafir, the only US-based ensemble dedicated to performing the Iraqi maqam in it traditional format. The group is led by the acclaimed Amir ElSaffar (santur-zither) and Dena El Saffar (joza-bowed stringed instrument, violin) of Iraqi descent, and features Tim Moore on percussion.
