DANCE NOW announces the lineup for the 2019 Festival ENCORE! The one-night-only performance will feature the 10 choreographers/companies selected by the DANCE NOW producers for having most successfully met the 2019 DANCE NOW Challenge: to create a clear and complete artistic statement in five minutes or less for the specifics of the stage at Joe's Pub. This year's Challenge winner is Nicole Vaughan-Diaz. As the Challenge winner, Vaughan-Diaz will receive a $1,500 stipend and a weeklong creative residency at DANCE NOW Silo on Kirkland Farm in Bucks County, PA. The ENCORE! program will be hosted by Deborah Lohse (aka TruDee).

The renowned Wajde Ayub, born in Aleppo, is a classically trained Syrian mutrib (principal vocalist) who has been acclaimed for his exquisite and commanding renderings of the repertoire of Aleppo, one of the great cultural centers of the Middle East; wasla, a musical suite that incorporates composed and improvised parts; and muwashahat, sung poetry. Since immigrating to the US in 2017, he has been a leading proponent of Syrian vocal music here. He is dedicated to maintaining the ancient musical traditions of Syria a?" traditions that have been put in danger by the civil war that has devastated the country. His performances, which include layali (melismatic vocalizations) and mawwal (unmetered song), are reminiscent of those of his mentor, the great Sabah Fakhri, and resonate with the musical ecstasy known as tarab, a heightened state of emotion similar to duende in flamenco. His ensemble is composed of a chorus and instrumentalists on oud (lute), violins, cello, nay (flute), qanun (zither), bass, and percussion who are highly regarded in the field of Middle Eastern music in the US.

Roundabout Theatre Company and Columbia University School of the Arts have announced the winners of Columbia@Roundabout's 2019 New Play Reading Series. As part of the collaborative partnership between Roundabout Theatre Company and Columbia University, the reading series awards three playwrights from the current MFA program and recent alumni with a cash prize as well as a reading in Roundabout's Rehearsal Hall, followed by a post-reading reception. Five finalists have also received cash prizes in recognition of their exceptional work. No other collaborative partnership in the New York area brings together an esteemed Ivy League MFA program with a Tony Award-winning, not-for-profit theatre. Bay Street Theater and Divaria Productions have announced a live opera presentation of Othello: The Opera and Play Enmeshed on Saturday, September 14 at 8 pm. This production is an exploration of the timeless classic though theater, opera & dance. The project will feature selections from Verdi's opera in Italian, parts of Shakespeare's text with professional actors and dancers, all three of which will transmit the essence of the story through different mediums. The story of Othello concerns themes of jealousy, misplaced trust and exclusion, all of which, though crafted 400 years ago, are extraordinarily relevant today.
