In a combined triumph for the Classic Popular Songbook, its purveyors and adherents, and the professionalism and perseverance of THE MABEL MERCER FOUNDATION, that unique organization presents its 30th Annual New York Cabaret Convention at The Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, beginning Monday, October 28th and running through Thursday, October 31st. The four individual concerts will be offered at 6:00 PM each evening, and more than seventy-five vocalists and musicians are scheduled to perform. Tickets are on sale at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office and www.jazz.org starting today, Monday, September 9. (more...)

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's opening concerts will introduce our new Music Director and Conductor Mario Alejandro Torres and showcase a program that is set to comfort, welcome, and delight our beloved audience. The concert opens with the soothing and warmhearted Gayane's Adagio by Aram Khachaturian, from his ballet “Gayane.” Nathan Chang then joins the stage to perform Elgar's mesmerizing Cello Concerto in E minor, one of the most important pieces in the cello literature. The BSO will conclude the concert with Brahms' most endearing symphony, Symphony No. 2 in D Major. After almost twenty years of perfecting and working on his first symphony, the second bloomed effortlessly from the master's mind. On the surface, this work is light in character; digging deeper, we find that Brahms' second symphony embraces an expansive and nuanced array of emotions. (more...)

Philip Pelkington, has produced a music video to benefit the charity, Direct Relief, as part of his Manhattan Showcase Project series. The project, #MSP4DirectRelief features students from Pelkington's New York and Los Angeles studios, many of whom have performed on Broadway stage, television and film. Any and all profits from the video fundraising project will be donated to Direct Relief (www.DirectRelief.org) which provides life-saving medical aid to areas impacted by disaster and poverty. If you've been a regular reader of this particular reviewer's musings, you know that every year there are long stretches of time where I just haven't been able to critique all the shows I've seen that deserve commentary. So I end up playing what they call in sports, 'Catch-up ball,' and post a mash up of belated reviews from past shows. It's kind of like a critic's version of the song 'Six Months Out of Every Year,' from Damn Yankees. Give or take a month or two, that's usually the time period during which I store unpublished reviews in my fevered brain and then unload them all in one seemingly endless column-like this one is going to be. If my cabaret-show reviewing days will be over (as chronicled here), I might as well go out with a bang-and relieve my procrastination guilt during holiday season. Now I can scratch one New Year's resolution off the list. (more...)
