Recently, we had the chance to speak with Drew Gasparini, who wrote the music and lyrics for The Karate Kid. We discussed what his creative process has been like for the show, what it’s like to write for an adaptation versus an original piece of work and even how he didn’t actually want to be a part of the Karate Kid musical in the first place!

Rehearsal photos have been released for the UK premiere tour of THE KARATE KID – THE MUSICAL, based on the Columbia Pictures film. The stage adaptation features a book by Robert Mark Kamen and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini, bringing the story of Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi to the stage.

Stages St. Louis is about to be thrust onto the international theatre scene with the U.K. premiere of The Karate Kid - The Musical. The critically acclaimed world premiere played to sold-out houses during its 5-week run that was originally produced at Stages St. Louis in 2022.

Last Wednesday an actor with ties to St. Louis made his Broadway debut as King Louis XIV in The Queen of Versailles. Just three years ago, Jake Bentley Young starred as Johnny in the STAGES St. Louis production of Karate Kid The Musical. That is where he first met Queen of Versailles co-producer and STAGES St Louis founder Jack Lane.

The producers of The Karate Kid - The Musical hosted a reading of the upcoming musical yesterday to a packed studio of Broadway industry heavyweights.

This past year was filled with exceptional theatrical productions in the St. Louis Arts Community. Nearly every performance in 2022 at STAGES St. Louis, The Muny, The Black Rep and Midnight Company were entertaining with only a few misfires. As a long-time season ticket holder to The Fabulous Fox Theatre and a first-time attendee to New Line Theatre, I had the opportunity to see nearly every theatrical production that was staged in these venues. Instead of compiling a top ten list of best shows, I decided this would be the opportunity to recognize the best work, both performing and technical theater, that I observed in 2022. Without further ado, here are the ten best works on the stages of St. Louis throughout the past year.
