Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center is offering a stellar series of jazz performances with more than two dozen musicians, vocalists, and dancers appearing in West Chester this September through December, hosted by local jazz and blues artist, Sara Michaels.

Performances of the music-filled Marie and Rosetta, which invites audiences to share an electric evening with legendary Arkansas native Sister Rosetta Tharpe, begin tonight at TheatreSquared.

Theatre NOVA, Ann Arbor's professional theatre with an exclusive focus on new plays and playwrights, presents 'The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith' by Angelo Parra and Miche Braden.

The swinging gospel sound that influenced rock and roll comes to the Marx Theatre March 3 when Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park opens MARIE AND ROSETTA, presented by Leading Ladies. The play, which first appeared off-Broadway, runs through March 31. (Official opening night is March 8.)

Marie and Rosetta chronicles the story of 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Early Influence Inductee Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her counterpart Marie Knight as they changed the landscape of modern music. Miche Braden will make her return to Cleveland Play House as Sister Rosetta Tharpe alongside CPH newcomer Chaz Hodges as Marie Knight. The true story of female inmates at Goree State Farm doesn't pull punches about racism, sexism, or the justice system. While the grim reality of incarceration (and potential sterilization) is ever-present, it is ultimately the humanity of these women “who've done bad” that emerges from Michael Bradley's well-plotted book and the fine acting of GOREE's ensemble, led by Lauren Patten (Fun Home).

Mosaic Theater Company of DC, the 2017 Helen Hayes Award-winning theatre for Outstanding Emerging Company, will begin its 2017-2018 season with the Off-Broadway hit The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith. Written by Angelo Parra and performed by the indomitable Miche Braden (who also directed and arranged the music) and directed by Joe Brancato, this boisterous show featuring thirteen songs tells the story of Bessie Smith's final performance after she and her band are turned away from a whites-only theatre in 1937 Memphis. Previews begin August 24 with a press opening of Monday, August 28, and the show runs through September 24, with a potential extension week through October 1.
