BAM to Host the 34th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BAM will host the annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20 at 10:30am in the Howard Gilman Opera House (Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Ave). The celebration brings together artists and civic leaders to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King. The 34th annual celebration will feature the creator of New York Times Magazine's acclaimed 1619 Project Nikole Hannah-Jones as keynote speaker. Additional free film, art, and music events are also scheduled on the BAM campus over the preceding weekend.

Steering Committee Plans 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

The 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, coordinated by the MLK Steering Committee, will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. The program will begin at 1:00 PM in Uihlein Hall and highlight our youth who interpreted Dr. King's works through art, including visual art, speech and writing contests from Milwaukee Public Schools, Wauwatosa Public Schools and West Bend Public Schools.

Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan Launches CINEMATTERS: NY Social Justice Film Festival In January

The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan announces the launch of a brand-new film festival next month: Cinematters: NY Social Justice Film Festival, which will present impactful films to engage the community toward a more democratic, inclusive, and just society. The festival, which will run January 16-20, 2020, explores various themes of inequality, injustice, advocacy and social responsibility, and sheds a light on timely social issues, including racial discrimination, LGTBQIA rights, environmental and water justice, immigrant rights and religious intolerance.

Frist Art Museum And Fisk University Galleries Present TERRY ADKINS: OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS EVER ON THE ALTER

The Frist Art Museum and Fisk University Galleries present Terry Adkins: Our Sons and Daughters Ever on the Altar, concurrent presentations of sculptures, prints, installations, and video by the multidisciplinary and multimedia artist and musician, on view at the Frist from February 20 through May 31, 2020, and at Fisk from February 20 through September 20, 2020.

Bainbridge Performing Arts Releases January Schedule

All Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) events are held at 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island. Tickets, information, and registration, unless otherwise noted, are available at the BPA Box Office, by phone at 206.842.8569, or online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org. Box Office hours are Wednesday through Friday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and one hour prior to each performance. Joe's Pub Releases Schedule for Showcases Coinciding with APAP|NYC 2020 and Under the Radar Festival

In January 2020, Joe's Pub presents its annual slate of showcases coinciding with APAP|NYC 2020, the yearly Association of Performing Artists Presenters conference drawing presenters from around the world, January 10-14. The month will also include the fifth installment of Under the Radar + Joe's Pub: In Concert, a collaborative series highlighting multidisciplinary artists at the intersection of music and theater during The Public Theater's innovative Under the Radar Festival, January 8-19.

RED BUCKET FOLLIES Raises $5,631,888 For Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Six weeks of enthusiastic fundraising erupted into two extraordinary performances of lighthearted parodies, inspiring calls-to-action and exceptional dance at this year's Red Bucket Follies. The show, which was performed December 9 and 10, 2019, celebrated the 58 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies that participated in fall fundraising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Chicago Sinfonietta Presents Its Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert

Leading the nation in programming works by women and diverse, under-represented composers, Chicago Sinfonietta, the nation's most diverse orchestra, presents its annual MLK Tribute Concert, celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through family, equity and the encouragement to execute positive change. Featuring several special guests, including Project Inclusion alumnus and current Chicago Sinfonietta Assistant Conductor Jonathan Rush, vocalist and semi-finalist on NBC's The Voice Kymberli Joye, and singers from three Chicagoland choruses, Chicago Sinfonietta is unveiling several firsts at the concert. Highlights will include Rush and Joye's professional collaborative debut during Patty Griffin's Up to the Mountain and the Chicago premiere of Joel Thompson's The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, allowing listeners to experience a sweeping, musical journey meant to drive poignant conversation and change in society. Chicago Sinfonietta's performances will occur Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Wentz Concert Hall at North Central College, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville, and on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave in Chicago.

AFROPOP Returns for Season Twelve

Black Public Media's acclaimed documentary series AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange is back in 2020 for its 12th season! Dedicated to telling real-life stories of culture, art and life from across the African Diaspora, AfroPoAfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange returns in January for its 12th season, exploring stories of modern life in the African Diaspora with a slate of documentaries journeying through Brazil, Nigeria, Turkey, South Africa, the U.S., Liberia and beyond. Premiering on WORLD Channel at 8 p.m. ET/ 10 p.m. PT on Monday, January 20, 2020, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the season opens with Joel Zito Araújo's My Friend Fela, an exploration of music, liberation and the enduring ties of the Pan-African family. New episodes of AfroPoP — which remains the nation's only public television documentary series dedicated to life, art and culture from across the African Diaspora — will debut every Monday through February 17. Executive produced by Black Public Media (BPM), the series is co-presented by distributor American Public Television (APT), which will release it to public television stations nationwide on February 6, 2020. P premieres on Monday, January 20 — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day — on WORLD Channel at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT.

Lula Washington Dance Theatre Returns to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts

The venerated Los Angeles-based Lula Washington Dance Theatre returns to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate its milestone 40th anniversary with a dynamic and powerful program exploring social and humanitarian issues. The company performs for three nights only, from Thursday, January 30 through Saturday February 1, 2020, 7:30 pm, in The Wallis' Bram Goldsmith Theater. The program, which includes three world premieres and a West Coast premiere, celebrates the dance company's past with some repertory gems and is also decidedly forward-looking, with new works from new voices, some of whom are a generation younger than co-founders Lula and Erwin Washington.

Anzanga Marimba Ensemble Will Return to Bainbridge Performing Arts in January

THE GREAT SOCIETY Closes on Broadway Today, November 30

Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan's The Great Society, starring Brian Cox ('Succession') as LBJ, directed by Bill Rauch, will play its final performance, as scheduled, on Saturday, November 30 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65th St) at Lincoln Center. At the time of closing, The Great Society will have played 26 preview performances and 72 regular performances.
