BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY Ignites Compassion and Unity at the Hobby Center Photo BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY Ignites Compassion and Unity at the Hobby Center
by Audrey Morabito - Mar 4, 2020

In over ten years of being in the audience at the Hobby Center, I have never heard applause as loud and abundant as I did at last night's curtain call. It was as if the whole audience agreed not only that we had witnessed something significant, but were acknowledging that we witnessed it together. In seeing COME FROM AWAY there is an otherworldly layer of unity as an audience member, as all of us shared to some extent the story that was being played out onstage.

The City of Gander had a population of about 10,000 people at the time, yet, without hesitation, they opened their city and their homes to the stranded passengers. COME FROM AWAY is the true story of how the people all came together when it felt like the world was coming apart.

On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all. COME FROM AWAY tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY at Des Moines Performing Arts: Going Back to the Rock Photo BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY at Des Moines Performing Arts: Going Back to the Rock
by DC Felton - Jan 29, 2020

In 2017, I decided in preparation for hosting my first Tony Party to listen to the nominees for Best Musical and Revival. Listening to these shows introduced me to 'Come From Away,' which opened at Des Moines Performing Arts on January 28. As I listened to the fantastic music, I fell in love with 'Come From Away.' I knew once the tour opened, I would want to see this show as soon as possible. When I looked at the itinerary of the first year of the national tour, the closest location was Omaha. So A few friends and I went to see the show. From the moment the music started, I was transported to Gander, and before I knew it, the show was over. As soon as I left, I was planning my next trip to Gander, which would be the tour stop in Chicago. I'm so excited that it has finally made its way to Des Moines.

BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY But Finally Home Photo BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY But Finally Home
by The Marriage Matinee - Jan 23, 2020

There is a day that is crystallized in the American consciousness as a day you will never forget, a day you can recall in perfect detail: September 11, 2001. On that day, so much of the bedrock of humanity felt like it was eroding into chaos as we all watched those planes strike the World Trade Center and reduce it to rubble, again and again. But COME FROM AWAY calls on us to remember something different about that day. It hearkens to the heart of what unites humanity rather than divides it. It is a look at the beauty of kindness being lived out in a small community on an island in Canada and how that kindness can overcome even the worst of days.

by Jeffrey Kare - Jan 15, 2020

Come From Away is based on a true story of when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small Canadian town turned into an international sleep-over when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from across the globe, were diverted to Gander's air strip on September 11th, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that they're all part of a global family.

BWW Review: Absolutely Fantastic COME FROM AWAY at PPAC Photo BWW Review: Absolutely Fantastic COME FROM AWAY at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - Dec 4, 2019

On the morning of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, there were a lot of other planes in the sky that had to be re-routed and emergency landed wherever pilots were able to find a runway. Thirty-eight of those emergency landings took place in the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland's quiet airport that was on the verge of being shut down for lack of use. The people of Gander, rather than being overwhelmed by the massive influx of 7000 scared and confused people from all over the world, sprang into action, set up shelters, made food and took people into their homes for five days until they could safely travel home. This is the rare 9-11 story that doesn't focus much on the attack itself, but instead on the ripple effect it had on the whole world, and how even in the midst of tragedy, people come together to help each other. While the premise might sound a bit corny, the execution is absolutely brilliant and the story balanced in a way that feels true to human nature and not at all saccharine. COME FROM AWAY is a rare new musical based on true events that is original, unique and absolutely wonderful.
