Some musicals fade with time, but more than 25 years after its London premiere, MAMMA MIA! seems determined to do the opposite. The musical continues to fill theatres around the world, introducing new audiences to the story while giving longtime fans another reason to revisit the songs they already know by heart. Few productions have maintained the kind of global appeal that MAMMA MIA! has enjoyed since its debut, and its latest stop at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, BC this week offers another reminder of why. 

Thanks to a 14 year run on Broadway and the hit 2008 film featuring a star-studded cast, Mamma Mia! is one of the most well-known Broadway shows internationally. The timeless music of ABBA and the strong themes of love, family, and self-identity make this show an instant success. Its popularity was immediately clear, with audience members donning feather boas, platform shoes, disco-era fashions, and the greek staples of flowing white and blue florals. Broadway Across Canada delivers with a truly impressive cast, striking wardrobe, and mind-blowing choreography.

20-year-old Sophie Sheridan grew up not knowing who her father was. Determined to find out, she snoops through her mother’s diary for answers. What Sophie finds scandalizes and delights her: there are three different men who could be her dad. Eager to solve the mystery, she invites them to her upcoming wedding – without telling her mom. So begins the smash-hit musical, Mamma Mia!
