Last night, Monday August 21, the actress and singer Emily Ellet was mobbed by her many friends and admirers in the audience when it was announced that she had eeked out a photo-finish win in one of the most competitive MetroStar contests in years. Her outstanding mini-set, in which she delivered a dazzingly original interpretation of the '80s disco anthem 'It's Raining Men,' put her ahead of the other four MetroStar finalists, each of whom delivered nearly flawless performances. Last night five finalists were selected to compete in next Monday's highly anticipated finale of the 2017 "MetroStar Talent Challenge" at the Metropolitan Room.
Next week's quarter finals of the 2017 "MetroStar Talent Challenge" features thirteen exciting talents vying to become the 10th MetroStar Talent Challenge winner. MetroStar's Top 13 is a baker's dozen of singers from a variety of backgrounds, including Broadway and cabaret, as well as a number of brand new talents, like 16-year-old Jackie Mate, who are hoping to make a big splash in their cabaret debuts.
The tenth annual "MetroStar Talent Challenge" is giving itself a fresh, new look as it adds two new categories to the career-boosting competition. This year, in addition to the MetroStar grand prize and its Special Audience Award (which was instituted in 2015), the 2017 edition of the summer tradition is adding an Innovation Award and a Best New Artist Award.

There's no 'Tomorrow' for this years four day 27th New York Cabaret Convention but there certainly was a thrilling performance of that song by host Kela Blackhurst and the Broadway by the Year Chorus. The composer and lyricist were in attendance as their songs were performed by a wonderful group of cabaret artists. The convention even produced a 12 year old to recreate the emotions of seeing 'Annie' as Zoe Gelman sang Maybe & NYC to the Rose Theater audience. Luckily there will be a 'tomorrow' for the Mabel Mercer Foundations Cabaret Convention and mark your calendars for the 28th New York Cabaret Convention in 2017.
Broadway's Max Chernin (Bright Star), Kaitlyn Davidson (Cinderella, Nice Work If You Can Get It) and F. Michael Haynie (Wicked), as well as Jed Resnick (Avenue Q)* will headline the The Mik e Pettry Project , the second in the Singers Forum/EMGCollective's collaborative songbook series on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, October 4 & 5, at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. The series brings together Broadway performers and members of the SF/AEA Scholarship Program to spotlight work of prominent new composers. Following the success of The Patrick Dwyer Project, the series now features composer/lyricist Mike Pettry (The Light Princess, Things I Left on Long Island) whose work has been produced at A.R.T., South Coast Rep, The New Victory Theatre, etc. Pettry's current projects include partnering with composer Eli Bolin as he provides the lyrics for The Last Song of Eddie Scourge, a hard-rock adaptation of the classic A Christmas Carol.
