The Stratford Festival’s 72nd season opened last night with a delightful production of William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT. Last performed on the Festival Theatre stage in 2017, it was high time that this comedy of mistaken identity, foolish pranks, and the pursuit of love be brought back for Stratford audiences. This production also marks the Stratford Festival Directorial Debut for beloved performer Seana McKenna.

The LP is the companion project to his wildly successful debut novel, Plastic which was released earlier this Spring to wide-spread critical acclaim. Together the album and book lead audiences into a surreal near-future world, peopled by plastic figurines and filled with the perils of climate crisis and a recent nuclear war. The submerged and, often, long-sublimated divisions and resentments and life motifs of two estranged sisters come to the fore in the visceral and joltingly immersive play entitled Problems Between Sisters. The domestic squabbles of siblings have long been given ample space in plays, films, and novels but, in this fine Studio Theatre production, the playwright Julia May Jonas delves into a feminist mirroring and elucidation of themes from playwright Sam Shepard’s well-known play True West. In this intriguing play, the battling brothers become two sisters, California becomes Vermont and screenwriting becomes visual and performance art.
