Take A Trip To The Moon With The Cincinnati Pops

July 5th marks the global release of the latest Cincinnati Pops Orchestra recording, Voyage, under the direction of Pops Conductor John Morris Russell. The first studio recording made at Cincinnati Music Hall following a major renovation draws inspiration from the stars and includes the world premiere recording of the title track by Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino. His composition, Voyage, was co-commissioned by the Cincinnati Pops and the National Symphony Orchestra and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing and the historic "giant leap for mankind."

U.S. Coast Guard Band Comes to Marcus Performing Arts Center

John Williams Adapts And Records His Iconic Movie Themes For Brand-New Album

Legendary film composer John Williams conducts a brand-new album of many of his beloved movie themes in stunning new adaptations written especially for his superstar violinist friend and collaborator Anne-Sophie Mutter. Recorded in Hollywood, Across the Stars will be released on 30 August on Deutsche Grammophon and includes familiar themes from blockbuster films including Star Wars and Harry Potter, as never heard before.

BWW Review: STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE: IN CONCERT at Des Moines Symphony: A Galaxy Far, Far Away comes to Iowa!

Over the last few years, the Des Moines Symphony has done an amazing job of starting and growing a pops series. About a year and a half ago, the brought in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: In Concert. It was originally slated for two evening performances and had to be extended to a third performance as a matinee. This year they continued by bringing "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" in January and have added "Star Wars A New Hope: In Concert" to their growing list of films in concert. With "Star Wars" they again started with two performances and due to popularity had to have a third performance matinee. I attended the matinee performance on June 6 and found myself having just as much fun as I did with the "Harry Potter" concert.

Parkening International Guitar Competition Names 2019 Winners

After an exciting week of classical guitar performances, Christopher Parkening and Pepperdine University announced the winner of the fifth quadrennial Parkening International Guitar Competition. The competition, the world's preeminent guitar competition, took place from Tuesday, May 28 through Saturday, June 1, 2019.

David Atherton and Augustin Hadelich Will Close the Special HK Phil's 45th Series

Continuing the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil), we are pleased to have invited another former Music Director, David Atherton, to conduct the finale of the HK Phil's 45th concert series. The concert will feature the Asian premiere of Tippett's Praeludium for brass, bells and percussion, and Holst's grand orchestral spectacular, The Planets Suite. Grammy Award-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich will join the orchestra and Maestro Atherton in Britten's Violin Concerto. The concert will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall on 7 & 8 June.

Brevard Music Center Sets Stage For Summer Performances

Las Vegas Philharmonic Concerts To Air On Nevada Public Radio

The Las Vegas Philharmonic has partnered with Nevada Public Radio for the fourth year to broadcast performances from its recently concluded 2018-19 season on Classical 89.7 FM Sundays at 2pm, starting July 7. Each broadcast will be 90 minutes to two hours in length and will include six performances from the Philharmonic's celebratory 20th Anniversary season. 

Eight Summer Performances Take The Utah Symphony To Communities Around The Wasatch Front

The Utah Symphony today announced the lineup for the 2019 summer community concert series in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, several of which feature outdoor venues and free performances. The schedule includes orchestra performances in Layton on June 17, Gallivan Center on Monday June 24, Thanksgiving Point on June 26, Taylorsville Dayzz on June 27, Utah Cultural Celebration Center on July 1, Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre on July 2, and Snowbasin on July 3. The final summer concert is in commemoration of Zion National Park's 100th anniversary, with a special performance of the orchestra with Sting on Aug. 31, 2019. No tickets are required for the Gallivan Center and Utah Cultural Celebration Center performances, which are free to the public. Tickets for the other performances are on sale now with ticketing information available at www.utahsymphony.org.

Terence Blanchard Honored as a BMI Icon

Last night, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) held its35th annual Film, TV & Visual Media Awards to celebrate the top performing composers in film, TV and visual media of the past year. The highest honors of the evening went to film composer and multiple award-winning jazz musician Terence Blanchard, who was named a BMI Icon in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community, and William Ross, who received BMI's Classic Contribution Award for his outstanding work as an arranger, orchestrator, conductor, music director, composer and mentor to emerging talent. The private ceremony was hosted by Vice President Creative – Film, TV & Visual Media, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President and CEO Mike O'Neillat the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. 

BWW Interview: Scott Gilmour And Claire McKenzie, creators of HI, MY NAME IS BEN at Goodspeed's Terris Theatre

What impact can one man who has lost the ability to speak have on those he encounters every day? If you are Ben, the central character in the new musical HI, MY NAME IS BEN, which opens this week at the Goodspeed's Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, CT the impact is greater than you might imagine.  I had the chance to sit down with the duo behind the show, book writer Scott Gilmour and composer and lyricist, Claire McKenzie who shared a little about their creative process, their journey writing the show, and how they work effectively together to bring a musical like HI, MY NAME IS BEN to life.
