Inis Nua Theatre Company has announced the regional premiere of a new adaptation of John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World, by acclaimed writers Bisi Adigun and Roddy Doyle.
The lyrical season will feature 12 titles, such as Turandot, by Busoni, Gianni Schicchi, by Puccini, Le Comte Ory, by Rossini, among others. The program also includes ballets, cinema and music, and concerts in a year in which São Pedro establishes partnerships with the Cinemateca, the São Paulo Companhia de Dança and guest orchestras.
The opera season at Theatro Sao Pedro, will begin with the premiere of Riders to the Sea, by Vaughan Williams, considered the greatest British symphonist. It's been over a century since John Millington Synge's Irish play The Playboy of the Western World was first performed, and almost 40 years since Mustapha Matura transported the story to Trinidad in the original version of Playboy of the West Indies. Sadly, Matura passed away in 2019 before he finished the musical adaptation of his work, but collaborators and co-directors Clement Ishmael, Nicolas Kent and Dominique Le Gendre continued the project and have now brought the spirit and humour of the Caribbean to a Birmingham stage.

Directed by Nicola Murphy (A Girl is a Half-formed Thing), Belfast Girls will run May 11-June 26, 2022, on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, with an opening night set for May 19, 2022.
