BWW Review: THE LITTLE FOXES Illuminates Aristocracy, Greed at St. Louis Actors' Studio BWW Review: THE LITTLE FOXES Illuminates Aristocracy, Greed at St. Louis Actors' Studio
by Tanya Seale - Oct 5, 2018

Lillian Hellman's 1939 drama, The Little Foxes, is a well-made drama about Southern aristocratic avarice and female suppression. When brothers Oscar (Bob Gerchen) and Ben (Chuck Brinkley) Giddens-who have inherited the whole of their father's fortune-go to their sister Regina (Kari Ely) needing money to build a cotton mill, Regina, the only sister in the Giddens family, must cunningly exploit her depressed husband Horace (William Roth), and outsmart her scheming brothers, if she is to enjoy any independence or wealth of her own. BWW Review: Upstream Theater's Delightful Slice of History SWEET REVENGE BWW Review: Upstream Theater's Delightful Slice of History SWEET REVENGE
by Chris Gibson - Oct 9, 2017

SWEET REVENGE, with the subtitle of: as performed by the Julius Slowacki Players, Saint Louis, 1933, is a delightful look back at our city's own Polish heritage. Artistic Director Philip Boehm translates ZEMSTA by playwright Aleksander Fredo, but gives the work a twist by showing us how the troupe, which ceased performing in 1959, would have staged the piece, albeit, in English. This is an enjoyable romp that's amusing, and supposedly based on a true bit of history that Fredo ran across. Boehm's translation maintains Fredo's clever rhyming scheme, which gives it a playful, lighthearted air. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Sep 27, 2017

Considered the finest Polish comedy ever written, this 19th century verse drama uses Moli re-like wit to poke fun of human follies. Upstream takes the hijinks to another level by presenting the play as performed by an actual amateur St. Louis Polish immigrant theater troupe from the 1930s. (more...)

BWW Review: Great Performances Highlight St. Louis Actors' Studio's THE GIN GAME
by Chris Gibson - Dec 16, 2015

When it comes to classifying THE GIN GAME, it's a bit of a sticky wicket. On the cover of Donald Coburn's play it says it's a tragicomedy, and yet it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. No wonder my fellow critics and I felt a bit confused as to where it should fall categorically. Personally, the amount of humor present leads me to side with way the play was published. Probably the most famous couple to play the leads in this two person play were Hume Croyn and Jessica Tandy, but many, many others have revived the play over the years. Luckily for you, the current production of this engaging and entertaining work features two of St. Louis' finest actors; Linda Kennedy and Peter Mayer. Under the guidance of director John Contini, this pair provide a wonderful experience that deserves your time and attention. Go see it. (more...)
