The Bent, the Coachella Valley’s LGBTQ+ theatre company, is presenting its first musical, A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, written by Terrence McNally (book), Stephen Flaherty (music), and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics). The writers and composer have put together a moving book, lyrics, and score that create a deeply affecting and emotional story, with just enough hilarity to soften the upsetting moments. The brilliant acting, singing, directing, and design make this show a must-see.
Whether or not you are familiar with this chaotic style of British comedy, Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guv’nors offers an enjoyable introduction to fast-paced, wacky farce. And I mean wacky. There’s nothing serious or thought-provoking about it. There’s enough of that on the news. And “guv’nor” has nothing to do with politics. It’s a colloquial British term for one’s boss or employer, in this case two employers. Bean adapted the play, set in 1963 Brighton, from Carlo Goldoni’s 18th century classic The Servant of Two Masters.
It was an unusually brisk day in Palm Springs when I set out for Coachella Valley Repertory for an interview with Howard Shangraw, who will be directing the next MainStage production of the 2026 season, titled, One Man, Two Guvnors. Upon a quick google search, I came to find that this play is a farce that takes place in Brighton, England.

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Coachella Valley Repertory’s production of “Pinocchio”—which, I am proud to say, after writing this article, I can now officially spell.

Joshua Tree's Summer Theatre Under the Stars is currently playing their third offering, Miles Gloriosus, and it's good enough that it makes me sad that there's only one more show in the season. I truly hope this becomes an annual event at the amazing Wind Walkers Medicine Wheel theatre-in-the-round.
The production was called The Wild West (Sh!t) Show, an original collaborative piece conceived and developed by Haley Kooyman. It is the first of four productions being produced by JT Theatre Under the Stars, sponsored by Wind Walkers and Thought Theatre.
