The major new folk musical Ballad Lines, produced by Aria Entertainment & KT Producing enters its final three weeks of its run at Southwark Playhouse Elephant running until 21 March 2026.

A journey through time and memory, Ballad Lines must be one of the most exciting new musicals to hit the stage in some time. We follow Sarah, an American queer woman, as she dives headfirst into her family’s roots. Through the centuries, the same melodies come back to link the women who came before her. It’s a story about female anger, patriarchal conflict, sacrifice, and the deep cathartic pull of feminine energy. Blending traditional folk music from Scotland, Ireland, and the Appalachian mountains with standard pop, Finn Anderson and Tania Azevedo write a visceral reminder of the power of choice.

Full casting has been announced for the London premiere of Ballad Lines, a major new folk musical by Finn Anderson (Islander, Streets) and Tania Azevedo (Mayflies, But I’m a Cheerleader).

The musical began in 2014, commissioned jointly by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Northwestern’s American Music Theatre Project. An earlier iteration of the musical received its world premiere in 2023 at Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling under its former title A Mother’s Song.

Sting will release The Last Ship (Expanded Edition), an updated version of his album featuring five new recordings, ahead of a series of international performances of the musical in which he will also star.

The music from major new Scottish folk musical Ballad Lines will be released as an ambitious 18 track concept album on 12th September, bringing together leading female folk and theatre artists from both sides of the Atlantic.

The brand new recordings feature an all-star cast of guest artists including Gaelic Singer of the Year Kim Carnie, JUNO Award-winning banjo player Kaia Kater and four-time BBC Alba Scots Singer of the Year Siobhan Miller alongside top musical theatre talent including Olivier Award-winner Rebecca Trehearn and CATS Award-winner Kirsty Findlay.

Soundtracked by the songs of Bob Dylan, Girl From The North Country is, at heart, a bleak meditation on untimely death; not just physically due to illness, murder and suicide (though that’s here too) but also spiritually due to the death of ambition, the death of hope and, most cruelly, the death of love.

It’s 1934 in the heartland of America and we meet a group of wayward souls who cross paths in a time-weathered guesthouse. Standing at a turning point in their lives, they realize nothing is what it seems. But as they search for a future, and hide from the past, they find themselves facing unspoken truths about the present.

The new Dublin & UK Tour production of Girl From The North Country is opening tonight in Dublin at the 3 Olympia Theatre. Written and directed by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson with music and lyrics by Bob Dylan.
