Las Vegas-Based Artist Angela Chan Finds A Unique Outlet To Help Empower Asian Women Around The World

The Cre8sian Project is the brainchild behind Las Vegas-based artist Angela Chan and is her way of giving back to the community while empowering Asian women around the world. Chan teamed up with New York-based artist Evan Cheng to develop female superhero characters that envelop qualities of a strong, superhero-like woman: determination, concentration, motivation and education. Chan's project is coming to fruition just in time for Asian Pacific Heritage Month which takes place in May.

This Spotlight focuses on Jennifer Chang, a director, actor and educator who helped found Chalk Repertory Theatre, a production company which matches plays to site-specific locations around Los Angeles. I first worked with Jennifer on Chalk Rep's production of Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan which featured a multicultural cast, performed outdoors throughout the lawns and courtyards at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles where the pre-eminent collection of Oscar Wilde materials in the world is housed.

BWW Interview: Playwright Anna Moench Deconstructs Her MAN OF GOD

Playwright Anna Moench's MAN OF GOD begins previews March 3, 2020, with opening night March 12, 2020 at the Geffen Playhouse. MAN OF GOD charts an eye-opening missionary trip to Bangkok of four teenage Korean girls under the chaperone of their revered pastor. When the girls realize their pastor has violated their trust (no spoiler here), they each envision their individual methods of payback. Maggie Burrows directs the cast of Shirley Chen, Camryn Kim, Natasha Liu, Albert Park and Jenapher Zheng. A very expectant Anna managed to squeeze some time out of her multi-tasking to answer a few of my probing queries.

People's Light presents Hold These Truths, a solo play inspired by the true story of Gordon Hirabayashi. As a young University of Washington student and practicing Quaker, Gordon struggles to reconcile his love for the U.S. Constitution with the government's orders to incarcerate people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. Sacred Fools Opens West Coast Premiere Of ANTIGONE

The Sacred Fools Theater Company is rounding out its Prime Season with the West Coast Premiere of Antigone, Presented by the Girls of St. Catherine's by Madhuri Shekar, directed by Reena Dutt. Opening Friday, March 6 and running through April 11 in the Broadwater Main Stage, the show will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with Sunday matinees on March 22 and 29, and April 5 at 3pm and one performance on Monday, March 30 at 8pm. 

Coeurage Theatre Company Announces New Artistic Directors

Having completed its 10th anniversary season in 2019, Coeurage Theatre Company, LA's only Pay What You Want theatre company, announced today that Amanda McRaven and Joseph V. Calarco have been named Co-Artistic Directors. They are joined by Associate Artistic Director Katelyn Gault, Artistic Development Associate Nardeep Khurmi, and CoLab Director Katie Pelensky.

Shirley Chen, Camryn Kim and More to Lead the Cast of MAN OF GOD at Geffen Playhouse

Geffen Playhouse today announced the full cast for its production of Man of God, written by Anna Moench (Mothers, Birds of North America) and directed by Maggie Burrows (Spacebar, Damsels). Man of God had its world premiere in January 2019 as an East West Players production at the David Henry Hwang Theatre at the Union Center of the Arts in Los Angeles.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, has shared the co-chair and host committee list of the 2020 TCG Gala: Our Stories, which will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020 at The Edison Ballroom, 240 W 47th St, New York, NY 10036.
