BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT at Golden Gate Theatre

Travelling productions do not come more lauded than The Band's Visit, winner of ten Tony Awards including best musical and a 2019 Grammy for best musical theater album. This is not your typical musical with hummable showtunes and slick choreography, rather an intimate, tranquil story that unfolds beautifully with little narrative bang. David Yasbek's lovely ethnic score transports us to Israel's isolated Negev desert where an unlikely meeting of longtime neighboring enemies, Arab and Israeli, unfolds without any politics or anger.

BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT is an Occasion Not to be Missed

Based on a 2007 movie and a premise that you wish actually happened (even though it didn’t), the musical, directed by David Cromer, is a gentle ode to open minds, tolerance, wrong turns and – sure – faith.

BWW Review: What's Gonna Happen is a Hilarious Time: TOOTSIE at the Hippodrome

In the oft-repeated words of the character Sandy, sung in a hilarious patter-fest at strategic points in the musical of Tootsie, playing this week only at the Hippodrome, 'I know what's going to happen.' What's going to happen is that you will attend the show and have an uproarious good time.

BWW Review: Broadway Across America's TOOTSIE THE MUSICAL is On a Roll!

My advice for TOOTSIE THE MUSICAL is to distance yourself from the original film, and accept they are taking a dated concept and transposing it awkwardly onto today.  You are going for the exquisite comedy performances that surpass the fact that TOOTSIE has not very much to say about gender that seems substantial.

Zions Bank Broadway at the Eccles announced today that the individual tickets for the tour of The Band's Visit, featuring music and lyrics by Tony and Drama Desk Award-winner David Yazbek, went  on sale Friday, November 12 at 10am.

Sedos to Present DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS at the Bridewell Theatre

Sedos is continuing its long tradition of performing award-winning musicals with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a sexy and irreverent musical farce based on the film of the same name. The show plays 24 November-4 December at the Bridewell Theatre, where Sedos is the resident theatre company.

BWW Review: At Dr. Phillips Center, TOOTSIE Brings Broadway Back... and 1980s Gender Ideas Too

But when all is said and done, after the big speeches are made and the morals have been imparted, TOOTSIE's 1982 DNA proves inextricable. Its parting lesson is fundamentally that women should be women and men should be men. The show's progressivism is limited to a fairly surface-level, lighthearted second-wave feminism that never rises above a 'very special episode' of any '80s sitcom. (Indeed, Michael's apartment set looks strikingly sitcomish, and all the dialogue there fits the bill.)

BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT at Shea's Buffalo

A visiting Egyptian band loses their way and a small town is forever changed. It seems that THE BAND'S VISIT is the TONY Award winning musical that no one has heard of. But that changed last night when the luminous National tour opened at Shea's Buffalo Theatre. It was evident that most audience members had no idea what they were in for when the lights dimmed and the hour and four five minute, intermissionless production cast it's spell.

To commemorate his life and work, the Committee of Theatre Owners will dim the lights of Broadway theatres in New York for one minute at exactly 6:30pm on Wednesday, November 3, what would have been his 83rd Birthday.

BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT Brings Broadway Back to Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center

I’m happy to admit that while I am indeed euphoric, I remain clear-eyed in the knowledge that this particular cultural offering is unique in its storytelling and in the characters who will live for years to come until the very last person who remembers experiencing the exhilaration of the return of live Broadway theater to Nashville speaks their names for the last time.
