The show also was honored that year with four Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Music, and four Outer Critic Circle Awards including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Score and Outstanding Choreography.
The Arvada Center has announced its six-play season, an impressive line-up of plays and musicals that span a range of human experiences including self-discovery, romance, humor, imagination and intrigue. The three musical, three play package is filled with popular titles and includes two regional premieres and an ongoing collaboration with Creede Repertory Theatre. Subscription packages range in price from $99 to $440 and are now on sale to Arvada Center subscribers and the general public. Single tickets for the 2014-2015 theater season go on sale Monday, August 4. Subscribing donors giving at the $150 level or above by June 2 will receive a free guest voucher for each subscription. These vouchers can be used for theater performances in the 2014-15 season. I love the Short North Stage for several reasons. First, they have boldly devoted themselves to resuscitating the nearly flatlined Short North theater scene, saving an iconic historic theater in the process. Second, more often than not, they embrace the eccentric, edgy flavor that makes the Short North remarkable, rather than conforming to traditional theater fare. That's where "The Who's Tommy" gets it right- it is edgy, fierce, and at times, electric. The rock opera, which premiered in 1983 with lyrics and music by The Who's Pete Townshend is a virtually dialogue free story of a 4 year old boy who becomes essentially catatonic after witnessing his presumed dead father kill his mother's lover upon returning unexpectedly from WWII. Young Tommy (played by an adorably wide-eyed, but obviously inexperienced Christian Giannone) becomes an accidental sensation once he discovers his talent for pinball.
The Daily Mail writes that Killian Donnelly will be joining Beverley Knight (The Bodyguard) in MEMPHIS when it opens in the West End this fall. Donnelly is currently starring in The Commitments at the Palace Theatre through September 14. MEMPHIS begins previews October 9 at London's Shaftesbury Theatre, with an opening slated for October 23.

Today in 1987, Les Miserables opened at the Broadway Theatre, where it ran for 6680 performances. Written by Claude-Michel Schonberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables is set in early 19th-century France. The plot follows the stories of many characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. An ensemble that includes prostitutes, student revolutionaries, factory workers, and others joins the lead characters. In January 2010, it played its ten-thousandth performance in London, at Queen's Theatre in London's West End. On 3 October 2010, the show celebrated its 25th anniversary with three productions running in the same city: the original show at London's West End; the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary touring production at the original home of the show, the Barbican Centre; and the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary concert at London's O2 Arena. The original Broadway cast included Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, David Bryant as Marius, Judy Kuhn as Cosette, Michael Maguire as Enjolras, Frances Ruffelle as Eponine, Braden Danner as Gavroche, Donna Vivino as Young Cosette, Jennifer Butt as Madame Thenardier, Leo Burmester as Thenardier, Randy Graff as Fantine, and Terrence Mann as Javert.
The Rainbow Theatre Project is presenting the rarely-performed Noel Coward gem Long Island Sound as the fourth concert reading in their inaugural season. Directed by Delia Taylor, Long Island Sound plays at Source in D.C. on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., and will be preceded by a reading of Dr. Samantha M.
