Mayor Bill de Blasio today encouraged New York City public school students and their caregivers to explore some of the city's cultural organizations this week ahead of the official start of school. The participating cultural organizations, which are offering free or discounted tickets, have started to reopen in recent weeks with rigorous new policies to protect the health and safety of staff and visitors.

The New York Times has reported that The Metropolitan Museum of Art laid off even more of its staff on Wednesday and reduced its workforce further through furloughs and voluntary retirements, leaving the museum with a staff that is about 20 percent smaller than it was prior the pandemic.
Jen Shyu Will Give World Premiere Of Her Solo Dramatic Work ZERO GRASSES At National Sawdust

Known for groundbreaking performances that bridge a variety of genres and cultural traditions, Jen Shyu (pronounced 'shoe') returns to National Sawdust to give the world premiere of her multilingual, multimedia monodrama ZERO GRASSES on Wednesday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m. The work was commissioned by John Zorn, who invited Ms. Shyu to compose a new work for his series at National Sawdust in celebration of The Stone, his revolutionary venue dedicated to the experimental and avant-garde. This premiere reunites her with Romanian director Alexandru Mihail, who also directed her acclaimed one-woman show Nine Doors, which premiered at National Sawdust in 2017 and was reprised at last year's Resonant Bodies Festival.

Jazz at Princeton University presents guest artist and Blue Note Records trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire in the world premiere of Slightly Left of Sorrow's Song, commissioned by Jazz at Princeton University to commemorate the 150th anniversary of W.E.B. DuBois' birth. Akinmusire will perform the 8-movement suite with the school's Small Group I under the leadership of saxophonist and program director Rudresh Mahanthappa.
The Core Theatre Plans New York City Debut With Original Play INFERNO

The Core Theatre's Artistic Director James Hansen Prince today announced the company plans an off-Broadway run of the original play, Inferno! Fire at the Cocoanut Grove: 1942, at Theatre 80 in New York City, November 21 - December 16, 2018. The play, written by James Hansen Prince, received its world premiere at The Core Theatre in Richardson, Texas, in November 2015, and had a subsequent premiere at the Boston Center for the Arts in February 2016. The off-Broadway run is The Core Theatre's New York City debut.
