Bare: A Pop Opera made its debut in Albuquerque this past weekend. The completely sung musical features music by Damon Intrabartolo and lyrics by Jon Hartmere. The duo wrote the book together as well. The plot focuses on high school students in a Catholic boarding school navigating coming of age, sexuality and religion – and the conflict these things inevitably bring.
With a sensitive approach and a contemporary perspective, Bare brings to light universal themes such as identity, sexuality, faith and the challenges of youth. Created by Damon Intrabartolo (music) and Jon Hartmere (lyrics and book), this powerful story comes to Brazil with a diverse cast and an innovative artistic proposal, packed with a contemporary rock soundtrack and profound lyrics.
One-off staged concerts are all the rage these days. A way for producers to attract established stars that will fill a room and the chance to test the waters for potential longer runs are only a few benefits. Realistically, they’re also cheaper, relatively risk-free, and easier to mount than a full-blown production. The latest in this type of venture is Bare, Damon Intrabartolo and Jon Hartmere’s musical with a troubled history.

Actor-singer-dancer-choreographer Adam Fleming became a part of Broadway history originating the roles of Sketch in Hairspray and Lucas in Bare. In 2005, he starred in David Brind and Adam Salky's acclaimed short film, Dare, about two teenage boys' tense, spark-filled encounter in a pool following high school play practice. Dare gained a cult following as part of Strand Releasing's 'Boys Life' series and ultimately achieved worldwide popularity via more than 12 Million views on Youtube. The fan fervor (and fan fiction!) eventually inspired a sequel, ten years later. The original and the sequel are now being presented together as The Dare Project and attracting new legions of fans.
