Imagine for a minute going home... moving away, and coming back to the town you once knew. The town you grew up in, fell in and out of love, and yet something still calls you back home. This ideal and the centralized themes that lessons from our past will continue to haunt our futures is the heart of the story found deep within the roots of Josh Tobiessen's Lone Star Spirits on stage at freeFall Theatre after its transfer from the Hippodrome in Gainsville. Josh Tobiessen's script is smart, edgy and full of laughs and is a thrilling comedy keeping you tuned in from the first beer to the last shot of whiskey. Director Stephanie Lynge and the entire producing team at the Hippodrome have put together a top notch show that is so fine-tuned you feel just as much a part of this small town as the characters at its center. Something very intriguing about this story is the dialogue and the flow in which its delivered. I think Director Stephanie Lynge said it best in her Director's Notes by saying, 'When you read the script, you can hear the pattern of the dialogue and how it trips along, builds to a joke, and then tops it again with another. And each individual character has their own voice, even in the writing. You can hear the dry humor of Jessica and the stumbling nature of Walter just from reading off the page. A truly gifted comedic writer like Mr. Tobiessen is a gift to a director and the actors as well, guiding us into the world he has created.' This is just one very true testament of what makes this show great.
Acting Against Cancer identifies itself as 'a nonprofit semiprofessional theatre company that strives to change the lives of children touched by cancer through the arts.' Within the Kentuckiana theatre scene, they have also developed a reputation as an ambitious theatre company most likely to perform modern musicals often labeled as 'counter-culture' or 'edgy.' Their current production of Duncan Sheik's American Psycho is absolutely the type of show we have come to expect from this talented group.

Overall, this is a play about the young having their voices heard. Says Director of this Skylight production, Molly Rhode, a?oeThe Newsboys Strike of 1899 may have been at the turn of the century, but it doesn't feel far away. The way these young people stand up and say, 'Listen to me!' is happening right now, all across the globea?? Young people are paying attention. And they deserve a seat at the table.a??
Despite being set in 1899, NEWSIES feels marvelously modern. It is sharp, slick, and explosive.
Even if, like me, you saw the bright new production of NEWSIES on Broadway in 2012, the Arena Stage setting is instantly memorable. Being emerged in the theater-in-the-round is like the difference between seeing a beloved film on the big screen and walking into the middle of the action in the Disney theme parks.

Playing this month at the Georgetown Palace Theatre is DISNEY'S NEWSIES, a high voltage new musical about the newspaper strikes in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The show follows a group of newspaper boys who are struggling to make enough to help feed their families. Prior to child labor laws, children of all ages did everything from hawk papers on street corners to deliver groceries or work in factories doing minimal paying tasks for pennies a day. Grueling work for kids but for families in dire financial situations the jobs were a godsend.
a?oeNow is the time to seize the day. Stare down the odds and seize the day. Minute by minute, that's how you win it. We will find a way, but let us seize the day.a?? Filled with exciting songs, outstanding choreography, and superb acting, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) presented one of my favorite musicals of all time: NEWSIES, in Vancouver this month. Disney's NEWSIES is currently playing at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park until August 17th.
Based on the cult classic movie of 1992 starring Christian Bale, David Moscow, and Bill Pullman, Newsies tells the 'David vs. Goliath' story of the newsboys of New York rising up to fight newspaper publishers in an attempt to secure rights for themselves. Newsies is also inspired by the real-life Newsboy strike of 1899, when Kid Blink led a group of newsies on a two-week-long strike against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other newspaper publishers. The musical shines a light on the exploitative labor practices and social injustices as a group of young kids try to fight against the powerful and corrupt businessmen of New York.

Disney's NEWSIES, a musical, historical fiction, based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, fills the Civic Center Music Hall with a hefty dose testosterone and rebellion that will have you itching to pump your fists in the air after each raucous, rambunctious number.
