The Personal History of David Copperfield leads the list of nominations for the 2019 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), announced this morning by British actors Naomi Ackie and Joe Cole at the Regent Street Cinema. Armando Iannucci's fresh take on Dickens' novel about the ups and downs in the life of its eponymous character is recognised for Best British Independent Film and Best Screenplay sponsored by BBC Films, amongst nine other awards. Dev Patel is nominated for Best Actor, with co-stars Tilda Swinton and Hugh Laurie competing in the respective Supporting categories. The film also features heavily in the technical categories with nominations for Best Casting sponsored by Casting Society of America & Spotlight, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing sponsored by Intermission Film, Best Make Up & Hair Design sponsored by MAC Cosmetics and Best Production Design sponsored by Studio Juice.

Bodhi Tree Concerts brings its award-winning special holiday performance, All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, back to the Veterans' Museum in Balboa Park for the third time since its premiere there in 2016. Conducted by Sacra/Profana's Juan Carlos Acosta, All Is Calm opens on Friday, November 15, with additional performances November 16 and 17. All profits will directly benefit the Veterans' Museum.
Greta Hodgkinson To Retire As Principal Dancer At National Ballet of Canada

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that Greta Hodgkinson will retire as Principal Dancer in 2020 after a remarkable career that spans 30 years. Ms. Hodgkinson will dance the title role in Giselle and appear in Petite Mort in November as well as The Nutcracker in December. Her final performance as Principal Dancer will be the seminal role of Marguerite in Frederick Ashton's Marguerite and Armand, acquired in her honour by Ms. Kain and the National Ballet, which makes its company premiere during the Winter Season February 29 a?" Director of The Royal Ballet Kevin O'Hare today announces that Marcelino Sambe has been promoted to Principal dancer, the highest rank in the Company. O'Hare comments: "I'm thrilled to announce that Marcelino Sambe will become a Principal dancer from the start of the 2019/20 Season. He has had a fantastic year with some notable debuts, including a dazzling Basilio in Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote, and a heartfelt Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet. The impressive range of his artistry has also been displayed in his performances this Season in Crystal Pite's Flight Pattern, Frederick Ashton's Les Patineurs and Wayne McGregor's Infra. He has the most wonderful personality that endears him to audiences and fellow Company members alike. I know everyone will be delighted with the news of his promotion. The Havana Film Festival New York to Feature New York Premiere of YULI

On Tuesday, April 16th, The Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY), a project of The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (AFLFC), is set to energize the city with a special closing-night premiere honoring Cuban ballet legend Carlos Acosta. Wrapping up HFFNY's 12-day celebration of Latin American cinema (April 5–16), the evening will feature the New York premiere of Yuli (2018) at the DGA Theater. This poignant film inspired by Acosta's life chronicles his rise from poverty and prejudice to become an icon of the dance world. The evening will begin with a pre-screening VIP champagne reception with Acosta, the film premiere and a post-screening Q&A, and conclude with a Cuban-themed dinner reception, Fiesta Cubana. Proceeds from the closing-night event support The International Performing Arts Foundation (TIPAF), a charitable organization that works closely with Acosta on his philanthropic initiatives, including his enriching Dancers-in-Residence training program.
