Matthew Bourne and his New Adventures Company spell electricity from the getgo. When critics, actors and other fans heard that Bourne was bringing the premiere US production of The Red Shoes to the Ahmanson for two weeks only, it instantly became a hot ticket. Why? What he produces and directs supercedesballet; even wordless, it's as theatrical as you can get with visual images and musical sounds that are super exciting to watch and listen to...and the music of Bernard Herrmann accompanying this piece is one of the greatest treats imaginable. The Music Center On Location announced the U.S. premiere of Akram Khan's Until the Lions, the retelling of an excerpt from the epic Sanskrit poem the Mahabarata through a synthesis of kathak -- the Indian classical dance form -- and contemporary dance. Part of the 15th season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center (Dance at The Music Center), Until the Lions will be performed by the Akram Khan Company at The Culver Studios in Culver City, CA from October 18 21, 2017. Master satirist Paul Rudnick blends a deep humanity with a honed sense of hilarity in this powerful and funny play about family and fame, the personal and the political, and the drive to stand up and speak out. But it is also one that promotes a very progressive political stance on human rights, especially within the gay community, with much of the dialogue presented as if they are soapbox speeches meant to sway the listener to take action. But given our current political circumstances, there is nothing wrong with encouraging people to take a stand and speak out to make the world a better and more equal place for everyone. (more...)

The Old Globe today announced the creative team for the next show of the Globe's 2017 2018 Season, acclaimed actor and playwright James Lecesne's tour-de-force one-man show, The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey. This thoroughly entertaining new play is directed by Tony Speciale and will run September 30 October 29, 2017 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Previews run September 30 October 4, with opening night on Thursday, October 5 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets start at $30 and are now on sale. (more...)
