BWW Review: PASSION at Custom Made Theatre Co. Presents a Chamber Version of the Sond Photo BWW Review: PASSION at Custom Made Theatre Co. Presents a Chamber Version of the Sondheim & Lapine Classic
by Jim Munson - Jul 8, 2019

Watching Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine's "Passion" recently at San Francisco's Custom Made Theatre reminded me what a difficult show it is to pull off. Although it contains several of the most rapturous songs Sondheim has ever composed, there is an underlying earnestness that can be unsettling to a post-modern audience inured to a world that is constantly commenting on itself. When the leading lady sings the plainspoken lyrics "Loving you is not a choice, it's who I am" she means it with all her heart and soul. Unusually for a Sondheim score, she doesn't follow that up with a complicated rhyme or self-lacerating zinger. Nope, this show is thrillingly about nothing more nor less than the nature of true love.

BWW Review: St. Louis Repertory Theater Presents A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2 Photo BWW Review: St. Louis Repertory Theater Presents A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2
by Steve Callahan - Oct 14, 2018

A scandalous drama is still politically potent after 139 years! When Nora Helmer slammed that door in 1879 she told the world that her duty to herself was greater than her duty to her family. Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House has been an iconic inspiration to generations of second-wave feminists. In that simple, strong action Nora--Torvald's 'little songbird'-- flipped the bird to centuries of patriarchy.

STAGE TUBE: Rachel Klein's SYMPHONY OF SHADOWS: A TALE FROM THE LAND BEYOND THE VEIL Set for June 8-23

Dixon Place will present the world premiere of Rachel Klein's Symphony of Shadows: A Tale From the Land Beyond the Veil on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from June 8 to at 7:30pm at Dixon Place / 161A Chrystie Street. This movement-based spectacular tells the story of a woman combating a variety of sleep disorders, phantasmagorical night terrors, hypnotic horrors, and other, visually stunning conjurings from the subconscious depths of her own disturbed mind. Symphony of Shadows merges striking elements of circus and aerial arts, dance and movement, burlesque, and operatic productions to vividly illustrate its storyline in a genre defying form, which 'evokes a live-action silent film.'
