Inaugural Season of New Mostly Modern Festival Features Eight Concerts

For its inaugural launch in June, Mostly Modern Festival (MMF), a new summer music festival that flips the traditional programming model by devoting most of its attention to the music of our time, will present eight concerts featuring an illustrious array of guest artists and ensembles, an orchestra largely made up of Mostly Modern Festival Institute (MMFI) participants, music by esteemed resident composers … and more than 30 brand-new works in world premiere performances by 30 MMFI participating composers (see list below).

Saxophonist Miguel to Perform at Zankel Hall, 12/7

On Saturday, December 7 at 9:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, alto saxophonist, composer, and arranger Miguel Zenon examines the complexities and contradictions of the Puerto Rican experience with his latest work-a multimedia presentation honoring his homeland entitled Identities Are Changeable: Tales from the Diaspora. The evening-length song cycle and video installation-created in collaboration with video artist and co-founder of the Marginal Utility gallery in Philadelphia, David Dempewolf-explores the experience of Puerto Ricans who have moved to the mainland, particularly New York City, and was inspired by a series of interviews that Zenon conducted with them. Audio and video excerpts of these interviews are woven throughout.
Roulette Presents SIM BIG BAND Tonight, 6/5

Roulette presents the School for Improvised Music (SIM) big band, tonight, June 5, 8pm. The SIM big band is comprised of many of SIM's esteemed faculty who will also compose music especially for this project. SIM (part of the Center for Improvised Music)i s a core group of professional musician/teachers committed to creating a school in New York City for emerging performers who want to pursue a serious study of improvised music. Since 2001, SIM has presented over 20 intensive workshop sessions for students from all over the globe. This big band project is one of several endeavors the Center for Improvised Music (CIM) is undertaking to celebrate the milestone of its 10 year anniversary. Another of these projects is an interview series in which SIM faculty will interview veteran jazz musicians in front of a live audience. CIM will also be hosting listening sessions in which musicians present music for the public as a way of educating the jazz audience at large.
