MONICA SPENCER BIO

Monica attended the Young Americans College of the Performing Arts, continued studying musical theatre at the New York Film Academy, and Eastern Michigan University for Media Broadcast Journalism and Art. Monica has worked as the resident set builder and designer for Theatre NOVA. She has also designed sets for The Encore Musical Theatre Company, The Flint Repertory Theatre, Oakland Community College, and Michigan Opera Theatre. Monica previously ran Bella Fortuna’s Dinner Theatre, and has entertained guests with Carnival Cruise Line. Some local performances include Friendly the Elf in I'm Streaming of an Alright Christmas (Nova) Laura in Advantage Rule (Open Book) Joan in Fun Home (Encore) Sara in Murder Ballad (Penny Seats) and Mae in Wild Party (Dio). Described as 'A Family Tragicomic,' Fun Home was written by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, best known for her long-running comic strip 'Dykes to Watch Out For.' Named the Best Book of 2006 by Time magazine, Fun Home was adapted into a musical by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and opened on Broadway in 2015 after a sold-out Off-Broadway run at the Public Theater in 2013.
