BWW Review: SONGS FROM THE SANTA FE OPERA at Home Computer Screens

On Saturday Evening, July 11, at 7:00PM Mountain time, Santa Fe Opera presented its online celebration of Mozart's The Magic Flute. The opera would have premiered in the 63-year-old New Mexico company's elegant open-air theater if COVID-19 had not caused the cancellation of the season. A recording of the overture from 2010, a drive through the grounds, and the beginning of a sunset reminded watchers of the glory that was and will again be The Santa Fe Opera.

BWW Overview: A Look-Back at Opera's Many-Colored Dream Coat of Performance Highs in 2018

Well, it's that time of the year again--time for a look-back on what was worth making note of during the calendar year that's about to come to an end. It's from a totally personal, subjective point of view, of course, but frankly that's the way opera-lovers always seem to like it, n'est-ce pas? The productions worth noting come from places big, small and in-between, from composers old as the hills to freshly minted or somewhere in between (likewise the performers), from traditional or boldly modern to simply stand up and sing.

Review Roundup: The English Concert - RINALDO by Handel at Carnegie Hall

Handel knew how to put on a show. With Rinaldo, the first Italian opera written for the London stage, he created a thrilling crowd-pleaser. Rinaldo dazzles with its expressive arias, like the plaintive "Lascia ch'io pianga," one of the most popular soprano arias ever written. Rinaldo's spectacular instrumental writing is unsurpassed, with rousing trumpets, drums, strings, and oboe in the martial aria "Or la tromba" and show-stopping harpsichord pyrotechnics-originally improvised by Handel-in the fiery aria "Vo' far guerra."

This Summer Marks the Final Season of BEL CANTO AT CARAMOOR

Opera at Caramoor (photo: Gabe Palacio) This summer marks not only the 20th anniversary, but also the final season of 'Bel Canto at Caramoor,' the program founded by Director of Opera Will Crutchfield to champion neglected bel canto operas and re-interpret familiar ones. To honor the program's legacy, Caramoor launches the summer season with a gala selection of bel canto's greatest hits in 'A Night of Italian Opera' (June 17) and presents a semi-staged account of Bellini's first bel canto masterpiece, Il pirata (July 8). Mounted in the superb acoustics of the outdoor Venetian Theater on Caramoor's idyllic Westchester estate, both events feature the resident Orchestra of St. Luke's and showcase the exceptional artistry of 2017 Artist-in-Residence Angela Meade - 'the most talked-about soprano of her generation' (Opera News) - who first catapulted to national attention in the title role of Bellini's Norma at Caramoor seven years ago. For full details of this summer's operatic offerings at Caramoor, click here.
