Drama Desk Awards to Be Announced by Author and Activist George Takei

The nominations for the 66th Annual Drama Desk Awards will be announced by actor, author, civil rights activist and influencer, George Takei, on Monday, May 16, with the top four categories announced live on Spectrum News NY1 at 4 p.m. ET.  Takei will join NY1 anchor Ruschell Boone and “On Stage” host Frank DiLella to announce the nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Play, Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Revival of a Play. Following the live announcement, the complete list of Drama Desk Awards nominations will be available on dramadeskawards.com. 

Grace Aki Announces Three Acts Before Thirty: An art Exhibition in Three Parts

Grace Aki’s pieces will be available for purchase at the opening night event and then available in person or via @graceakimadeit Instagram beginning May 7th. A portion of profits will benefit the AAPI Transportation Fund. Art can be collected or shipped following the conclusion of the exhibition, May 27th.

New York City. 1863. The Civil War raged on. An extraordinary thing occurred amid the dangerous streets and crumbling tenement houses of the Five Points, the notorious 19th-century Lower Manhattan slum. For many years, Irish immigrants escaping the devastation of the Great Famine settled alongside free-born Black Americans and those who escaped slavery, arriving by means of the Underground Railroad. The Irish, relegated at that time to the lowest rung of America's social status, received a sympathetic welcome from their Black neighbors (who enjoyed only slightly better treatment in the burgeoning industrial-era city). The two communities co-existed, intermarried, raised families, and shared their cultures in this unlikeliest of neighborhoods.
