Carmen Vass BIO
Training: Carmen originates from New York but has received the majority of her tuition in London, training in musical theatre at the BRIT Performing Arts School and developing her classical vocal technique at Birkbeck University (Abbey Opera Diploma). Since then Carmen has engaged in private tuition to become an accomplished lyric coloratura soprano. Her interest in performance began in New York at the age of four, attending West New York Ballet School. Subsequently moving to Germany at a young age with her family gave Carmen the opportunity to become fluent in German and to further her studies in music and performance by joining FEST (Frankfurt English Speaking Theatre) and she started singing professionally with the Kinderchor des Goethegymnasiums Frankfurt in concerts at Alte Oper and Yahr Hundert Halle.
Theatre and opera include: recently, Mabel cover/ensemble in The Pirates of Penzance (Carl Rosa Opera Company UK tour). She made her West End debut in 2008 with Carl Rosa in The Mikado, Iolanthe and The Pirates of Penzance (Gielgud) and worked with them on HMS Pinafore (USA tour) and The Yeoman of the Guard (Tower of London Festival). Also, Annina/ensemble in La Traviata (Arts Depot and UK tour), Adele in Die Fledermaus (UK tour), Mme de Chateau d’Yquem in Not in Front of the Waiter (Isles of Scilly tour), Frasquita in Carmen (London City Lit), and Macduff’s Son/ensemble and Slave Girl/ensemble in Aladdin (Bad Hamburg Kor Theatre, Germany).
Concerts include: soprano soloist (Mozart, Britten, Verdi and Strauss) for three years at the Maida Vale Music Festival and soloist for charity events including Some Like It Hot charity auction (Barbican, MediCinema).
Other work includes: on television, stand in for Mock the Week and As Seen on TV, and character dancer for Lee Evans BIG at the O2 (performance and DVD).
