Originally scheduled to run from Sun Jan 9 to Mon Jan 31, the hybrid virtual and in-person Festival was extended by several days to accommodate the world premiere of John Kearns’ “Boann and the Well of Wisdom,” which was forced to reschedule its run at Ryan’s Daughter due to COVID-related developments.

The 13th annual Origin 1st Irish Theatre Festival wrapped up its first all-virtual edition last week with a closing ceremony attended by audience members from both sides of the Atlantic. This year the world's only festival devoted to producing and presenting the plays of contemporary Irish playwrights from around the world, hosted a total of 20 virtual events, in three weeks from January 11 to 31.

a??a??a??a??a??a??a??a?oeThe 8tha?? made sure its one win (out of seven nominations) counted as it nabbed Best Production at the 2020 Origin 1st Irish Theatre Festival Awards at Rosie O'Grady's in Times Square tonight. The world premiere of Seanie Sugrue's comedy-drama about a family's tensions around Ireland's recent epic referendum to overturn the 8th Amendment outlawing abortion, ran for 13 performances at The Secret Theatre in Queens and was produced locally by Locked in the Attic Productions, with Five OHM Productions.

There would be far fewer complaints about having too many revivals on Broadway if they were all done the way the Mint Theater Company does them. Under artistic director Jonathan Banks, each piece mounted in their intimate space has an interesting story behind it, usually that of a forgotten playwright or a rarely-produced piece by someone few associate with writing plays. Their productions define the most positive aspects of museum-quality theatre, with visuals and interpretations that take you back to the time when the play was contemporary, rather than dressing the play in a manner that forces it to relate to contemporary times.
