The Light in the Piazza began its life at Seattle's lntiman Playhouse in 2003 before moving to Chicago's Goodman Theatre in 2004. The musical, starring Victoria Clark as Margaret Johnson, Celia Keenan-Bolger as Clara, and Steven Pasquale as Fabrizio, tells the story of a mother and daughter traveling through Italy in the 1950s. When a gust of wind sends Clara's hat tumbling into the hands of a young Italian, Fabrizio, their instant attraction sets off a chain of encounters that Margaret anxiously tries to manage. Beneath Clara's radiant innocence, however, lies a hidden truth-she suffered a brain injury as a child that left her with childlike sensitivities, complicating her ability to navigate love and independence.

As Clara's romance with Fabrizio deepens, Margaret's fears intensify. She struggles to protect her daughter from heartbreak while confronting her own failing marriage and loneliness.
