BWW Review: THE GREAT GATSBY Brings Iconic Characters to Life at the Orlando Shakes!
by Kelli McGurk - February 14, 2017
Gatsby? What Gatsby? When you hear this charming protagonist's name, what images flash through your head?  Lavish parties dripping with elegance?  An atmosphere of abandoned care filled to the ceiling with social climbers?  Pearls, fringe, and feathers that drape over the silhouettes of dancing women?  Smoke and mirrors that orchestrate a timeless vortex of pure magic?  'The Great Gatsby' has extended beyond the realm of high school reading curriculum, and has become an iconic entity synonymous with the 1920's.  The 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald has inspired certain adaptations including ballets, television episodes of popular shows, computer games, and most famously the 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire.  The Orlando Shakepeare Theater continues this legacy with their production of the stage adaptation by Simon Levy which opened on February 8th.
BWW Review: THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
by Libby Champion - February 13, 2017
S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G B-E-E. Those 11 letters spell out 'spelling bee,' but in the Garden Theatre's production of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, those 11 letters spell so much more than that. Based on a fictional spelling bee in the fictional Putnam County, this hilarious and heartfelt tale centers on six young spellers who made it through various rounds in their own school's spelling bee to compete at the illustrious 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Along with the six adolescent kids are the three adults who run the bee. Each child is played by an adult and each of them have their own quirks, hardships, and goals which make this show an absolute delight.

BWW Review: Figuring out why all the D'Ysquiths are dying in GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE at Dr. Phillips Center
by Kimberly Moy - February 08, 2017
With a title like A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER, you could expect a darkly toned show like SWEENEY TODD. Or perhaps something sexy like CHICAGO; or even something historic like ASSASSINS. While murder musicals have been done, you probably haven't seen something quite like this.

BWW Feature: Kim's adventure to Food Truck Friday - Broadway Edition
by Kimberly Moy - February 06, 2017
Food is my favorite thing. Theater is my second favorite thing. Combine those together and it's a sure way to ensure I will appear. Thursday's FAIRWINDS Broadway in Orlando 2017 - 2018 season announcement was met with a lot of excitement. Unlike year's past, there was no formal event to announce the new season. (I pulled my car over on I-4 by Disney to read the press release.)

GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE, Broadway's 'Little-Show-That-Could,' Pulls into Orlando
by Matt Tamanini - February 06, 2017
When A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER debuted on Broadway In October 2013, very few, if any, theatrical observers pegged the show for a two-plus-year main-stem run and four Tony Awards. After debuting at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut the previous November, and having another out-of-town tryout the following March at the Old Globe in San Diego, the show came to Broadway with very little fan-fare. Over-shadowed in the season by bigger-name musicals like ALADDIN, LES MISERABLES, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROL KING MUSICAL, and HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE trudged along in its first six months in New York hovering between $400,000-$500,000 at the weekly box office; likely not covering its operating costs.
