Juana, by Carla Lucero and Alicia Gaspar de Alba is the professional premiere of a rare new Spanish-language opera which presents the life of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, a famous Mexican intellectual, poet, artist, and nun who challenged the Inquisition in defense of womens rights. A stunning work of contemporary composition, Juana also represents a valuable addition to the Spanish-language opera canon, which is sadly quite limited compared to other languages. The largely LatinX cast will have a rare opportunity to express themselves onstage in the tongue of their countries of origin. Because of this we hope to reach a wide audience among New Yorks LatinX community. Five performances of each work will be presented at the Baruch Performing Arts Center over the month of August, 2022.
