It’s hard to capture the wind, the freedom of the highway, and the psychedelic insanity of road-tripping in the 1970’s. Ellen Kaye, whose parents owned the iconic NYC restaurant, The Russian Tea Room, ran away from home in 1974, at age 14, and hitchhiked 7,500 miles across America. Upon her return to NYC, though she was not an addict, she was exiled to Phoenix House, a drug rehabilitation program. In this show, she tackles race relations, gender inequality, and class struggles through humor, wit, and music. Ellen speaks directly to our current times from the turmoil and excitement of decades past.
