What do you become when who you are expected to be cannot exist? Who can you turn to? And what does necessity force you into?

Two of Shakespeare’s most iconic female characters, Lady Macbeth and Ophelia, each arrive at a pivotal moment, in their stories and the larger story at hand. And yet, neither are seen by the audience during these moments. This time, they are. A joint play made of two solo acts, Daughters, Wives, Mothers explores the weight of grief, the respite of girlhood, and the torment of madness through the eyes of these two legendary literary figures. What turns Lady Macbeth mad? And what really happens to Ophelia by the riverbank?

Content Notices: Fake blood, simulated alcohol use. Discussions of: Death, murder, loss of a parent, suicidal ideation, loss of a child, grief, drugging

Cast

Madeline Burk
Lady
Madeline Burk (she/her) is a theatre artist and educator based in Philadelphia. She started writing Lady in late 2022 and has found so much joy in fleshing out the world of this wildly intimidating character. She works as a teaching artist and as a historic storyteller and first person interpreter in Philadelphia, and she has played a wide array of roles as a performer; some recent favorites include Reza in Once, Phoebe in Gentleman’s Guide, Polly in Threepenny Opera, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. Love and gratitude to Conor, her fellow Amalgamation co-founders, William Shakespeare, every solo performer she has borrowed from, Amanda for her ever-articulate insight, and Shira, who’s been in this from the start.
Shira Holtz
Ophelia
Shira Holtz (she/her) is a multi-hyphenate artist based in Westchester, NY. Ophelia is incredibly near and dear to her heart, and she’s honored to get to tell a new version of her story. Shira believes everyone has a story to tell, and loves the chance to make theatre alongside and in collaboration with other artists. Favorite acting credits include (&Medea), Everything I Do, I Do For Taylor Swift, Antigone, Seussical, and Mamma Mia. She also appears on the concept album of Waiting: A New Song Cycle, and the Muhlenberg Chaimonics’ newest album, With Love, From 149. Both albums are available on all major music streaming platforms. All the love to her family, Amalgamation, Amanda, and Maddy. www.shiraholtz.com
