The Slipper Room Presents Rick Shapiro in RESTLESS Image

Comedian, poet and author Rick Shapiro is to appear in his own show 'Restless' tonight at the Slipper Room in the Lower East Side.

Shapiro, one of the most innovative and surreal comedic talents and a staple of the NYC and LA Underground comedy scene, began his career in the early 1980's performing stand-up at Catch A Rising Star on Broadway. He has also acted and starred in numerous films by Louis C.K., including Tomorrow Night. Shapiro is most commonly referenced as Jerry from HBO's Lucky Louie. He is, however, a 30-year comedy stage veteran and master of long-form and improv and has been seen on multiple television channels including HBO, FX, CBS and Showtime. In 2012 Shapiro played the role of 'T-Rick' in Warner Bros. cult comedy picture Project X.

Shapiro's guest opener for tonight's performance is Matt Roper, the comedian, writer and variety performer. Roper made his NYC theater debut portraying Chico Marx in I'll Say She Is: The Lost Marx Brothers Musical and has since become a familiar figure to downtown audiences, performing with Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, 3LD, Visceral Abstractions and with Mat Fraser and Julie Atlas Muz's OneOfUs collective. He performs internationally with his alter-ego Wilfredo, a powerhouse musical comedy creation with two albums, a short film and countless tours to his credit. Roper is a founding member of the Secret Variety Society and the proud recipient of a Malcolm Hardee Award - presented annually at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Slipper Room first opened in 1999 when the neo-burlesque scene was still in its infancy, becoming the first venue specifically dedicated to showcasing the work of a new performance collective, designed and curated to nurture emerging talent without fear of censorship. Lady Gaga, Leonard Cohen, The Scissor Sisters, U2 and Joan Rivers number among the artists who have guested over the years.
