The Black Project Announces First Reading Cycle

A bold new reading and workshop series for early-career Black playwrights, The Black Box Project, announces its inaugural workshop cycle with a reading of plays Fulton by Morgan Wardlaw and Queen Peaches by Alric Davis at The Tank October 8th, 7pm.

Directed by actress/community organizer Nyla Adele as well as the playwright, Fulton is a fast-paced drama beginning with an innocent New Years Eve celebration in the Crown Heights apartment of two young Black siblings with their (white) friends, spiraling into an unpredictable tragedy exploring gentrification, liberal well-meaning, and the intersections of mental health and police brutality. Also directed by Ms. Adele, Queen Peaches is a gripping serio-comic period piece taking place in the Houston chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1968, following "Peaches" as she discovers and reveals her pregnancy by the married leader of the chapter and watches her world and those of her loved ones become engulfed in misogyny and homophobia.

Curated and produced by Ms. Adele and playwright/actress Rosie DeSantis (writer/dir. Letters in the Dirt and two-time New York Innovative Theater Award nominee), the launch event will include a feedback session in which the audience can offer their thoughts and questions to the playwrights, as well as a DJ'd cocktail hour meet-and-greet in The Tank's lounge & black box space.
