SIN Has Its World Premiere At Baruch Performing Arts Center's Rose Nagelberg Theatre

SIN, a mystical comedy, based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story "The Unseen," adapted by Mark Altman, will have it's world premiere at the Baruch Performing Arts Center's Rose Nagelberg Theatre (55 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street). Opening Wednesday, March 17, 2010, SIN is directed by Kent Paul. Previews begin Tuesday, March 9th. 

Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story, The Unseen, Mark Altman brings the devil, demons and infidelity center stage in SIN, a new comedy that pits a happily married couple against the devil himself. On Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, the devil and his demons descend on the tiny town of Frampol. Satan has chosen this most solemn of occasions to test the faith of a happily married couple and in the process ruins their lives. It's a devilish look at two love triangles, one human and one heavenly.

The cast features Marilyn Chris, Paul Collins, Jessiee Datino, Pierre Epstein, Sarah Grace Wilson and Grant James Varjas. Sets are by Michael Locher with lights by Matthew McCarthy; and costumes by China Lee. Mark Stuart is the associate director. Robert Rees has composed music for the show.

MARK ALTMAN (Playwright) was the associate artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre: Folksbiene and co-founder and former artistic director of New Worlds Theatre Project. He has collaborated with the New Stage Theater Company for whom he authored Oh Those, Beautiful Weimar Girls, which appeared at LaMaMa E.T.C. A former Talmudic scholar, Mark Altman's religious background is not unlike Mr. Singer's. Mr. Singer was a Yeshiva student until he followed his brother out of the religious enclave. A native Yiddish speaker, Mr. Altman reads Singer in the original Yiddish. "I don't read Singer. I live Singer," says Altman.

KENT PAUL (Director) directed the American premieres of Frank McGuinness' Gates of Gold (59E59) and The Bird Sanctuary (Pittsburg Public). He helped Keith Powell launch the Contemporary Stage Company in Wilmington, DE with the production of Donald Margulies' Collected Stories, starring Lynn Redgrave; and The Island and Exits and Entrances for the 2006 Athol Fugard Festival. Regional productions include Long Day's Journey Into Night (Sam Waterston, Elizabeth Franz, John Slattery and James Waterston) and Lanford Wilson's The Mound Builders, among others. He produced the documentary film Sanford Meisner- The Theater's Best Kept Secret, which was broadcast on PBS, had an extended run at the Public Theater.

ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER, one of the leading figures in the Yiddish literary movement, Singer was a Polish-born Jewish American author noted for his short stories and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978. His feminist story "Yentl" has had a wide impact on culture since its conversion into a popular movie starring Barbara Streisand. Perhaps the most fascinating Singer-inspired film is 1974's Mr. Singer's Nightmare or Mrs. Pupkos Beard by Bruce Davidson , a renowned photographer who became Singer's neighbor. This unique film is a half-hour mixture of documentary and fantasy for which Singer not only wrote the script but played the leading role.

Performances of SIN are as follows: Tuesdays at 7PM, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8PM, with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2PM and Sundays at 3PM.
