CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

DANI, young girl, playing age 9 years old. Extraordinarily precocious. Quirky and imaginative, but with a dark undertone. A gigantic bundle of energy. Incredibly vibrant, defiant spirit. Resilient and unbelievably determined. Essentially, she needs to convince the audience that there's no way she is possibly going to die. It's also important that she's able to capture the tone of the piece, particularly the ironic humor. She needs to be able to attain the heightened sense of reality that allows for the bizarre, quirky, dark humor of the piece. We need to see her create a world that we buy into immediately. The audience must absolutely fall in love with her. Strong belt to D, head voice to F.

MARTY, young boy, play age 10 years old. Nerdy, shy, and vulnerable, but able to mask that with an obviously false sense of childish bravado. Scared beyond belief, but embarrassed to admit it. We need to believe that he's the kind of dorky kid who would idolize everything he sees in the movies. Lonely, wide-eyed, and easily excitable. It's crucial that we find a “Marty” who has great chemistry with whoever is playing “Dani,” and that they can both play the cuteness of the love story without being aware of how cute it is. Strong belt to C#.

OLIVER TWIST, the protagonist of the story. He is a lonely orphan boy born in the workhouse. 9-12 years old. Sweet faced and innocent. Boy Soprano. (We are not auditioning girls for the role of “Oliver”)
