Alfred Hitchcock directed one comedy in his long movie career. And this is not it. At least it wasn’t until Patrick Barlow got his hands on Hitchcock’s early mystery thriller THE 39 STEPS. Suddenly this early Hitchcock chase movie is joined with the off-the-wall comedy of Monty Python, and the audience is laughing its way through one of Off-Broadway’s most popular hits. Seems this man is falsely accused of murder, then handcuffed to an attractive blond on a train, then running across the dark, fog shrouded moors of England, then unscrambling the mystery of the 39 steps during a British music hall performance. The audience’s imagination is really put to use as this fast-paced comedy comes tumbling to its surprising end.
