The BroadwayWorld Student Center is a comprehensive Student Database listing college and university performing arts programs across the country making it easier for prospective students by showcasing programs searchable by schools, location, degrees and concentrations.

The Student Center also offers a show calendar of college and high-school productions where schools can upload photos, videos, cast lists, articles and other media content for each of their shows. BWW will be combing through all content regularly and will launch weekly feature stories highlighting productions locally and nationally that have provided us with this extra content.

This week, BWW is excited to spotlight the students and faculty of the Theater and Dance Department at Colby College in Waterville, Maine!

The Theater and Dance Department at Colby College offers students a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the history, literature and production of performance leading up to Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theater or Dance. The mission of the department is to impart liberal arts values by fostering creative expression, stimulating critical and imaginative thinking, and increasing cultural literacy through study in a spectrum of studio, laboratory and discussion-centered courses.

The program of study includes frequent opportunities for practical experience in theater and dance, including creative research and production opportunities and service learning projects. Undergraduate students in theater and dance also enjoy opportunities to increase their abilities in self-reflection, multicultural sensitivity, and the comparison of social values and ethical systems; in short, they learn how to be productive citizens and professional leaders through their scholarly and applied experiences. The department also seeks to entertain and to educate the larger community through its rigorous production schedule of plays, dance concerts, touring artists, and residency workshops with guest artists.

As part of its Off-Campus study program, The Theater & Dance Department provides students with the opportunity to work side-by-side with the staff at the Old Vic’s New Voices program while they are studying abroad in London. The OVNV program, under the leadership of Old Vic Artistic Director Kevin Spacey and OVNV Head Steve Winter, aims to support emerging talent, inspire young people and open up The Old Vic Theatre to new and diverse audiences.

Upcoming productions at Colby College include 'Colby on Stage', 'The Passion Project/Reid Farrington', 'Lysistrata', 'Fall Dance Concert', 'Light of the Mind', 'elephant Jane Dance/Heidi Henderson', the 'New Works Festival' and the 'Performance Lab Series' rounding off the year in May 2013.
